Cheap Raid 0+1 Possibilty

A couple of these make a nice and cheap redundant raid 0+1 array.

Two of these means RAID 0 for less than $100 (before shipping).

That is a much better deal. Last time I checked 250GB drives cost around $130-150 and 80GB was in the price range of $75 for OEM and $90 for retail.

Usually you can only buy 1 product per household w/ rebates. While the 250GB drive may be a better deal, you won't get 2-4 of them at that price without hassle and a bunch of friends. If you need 250GB of storage, certainly the better way to go, if you need 160GB of RAID10 storage, I doubt you'll find another way to get that for $200.

Exactly, I ordered a 160GB Hitachi SATA drive a year ago on a rebate deal, and had an interest in RAID0, but it was SEVERAL months later before I could find it anywhere in another rebate sale, I already had 2 x 250GB SATAs in RAID0 by then.

There are other advantages of the drive. You don't have to mess with rebates, some systems simply do not need the capacity (my parents have only used 10GB of their available 20), its a single platter, and it is SATAII...

I have 2 of these drives in a raid...They are blazing fast. Remember----These are SATA II drives whereas most SATA drives (Like the 250gb) are only standard SATA...

As far as the deal goes it is not very hot....Looks like it is higher then Newegg after shipping:

What Googer was in reference to was the 0+1 aspect of this deal. It does actually produce a very fast 160GB mirrored array and it's cheap. Admittedly, you can build ones that are twice as big for less than 2x as much moola. But what he suggests for a decent 0+1, is at a very good price point.

I have four of these in a RAID setup - IMHO worth every last penny and SO cheap. They're quite fast and noticeably quieter than the 7200.9 Seagates.

Not disagreeing with that at all. I buy a ton of these drives for my clients workstations.

I was a little disapointed I couldn't get to a crap usa to grab that $50.00 250 gig hd, but it was just a regular sata 150 anyway.

Then I checked out ewiz and grabed a pair of these for my asrock board I'm putting together

I'd like to point out... Power.

Energy costs are rising for most people. You'll be using much more power for 4x80 gig drives then 2x160 gig drives in a RAID 1.

Not everyone's powersupply can handle 4 drives reliably... two larger drives in RAID 1 will be less of a strain on the Powersupply as well.

SATAII doesn't add anything speed-wise on a practical level.

What caught my attention was that the subject seemed to push RAID 0+1. Since RAID 1+0 is inherently more reliable, why bother posting how you can set up the lesser RAID system?
