So, I got some old computer parts from my school for free, but all I'm really using is the case....

I'm pretty sure the old PSU is an ATX style, so I'm pretty sure my case will fit ATX supplies. (Its serial number was ATX-250-1, made by Fong Kai Industrial)

Anyways, anyone have any silent, but moderately cheap PSUs to recommend? (my old one had a fan, so that's why I'm saying silent)

Not cheap but for sure silent. The Etasis 300W passive. They build it for Silverstone
as well as offering it under thier own name. No fan, totally passive but does demand
some active case air flow.

The lower wattage Seasonics will be cheaper but have a fan.

A second vote for SPCR. I believe in cooling being the first priority and silence plays
second fiddle.

Quality of Cooler Master PSUs are questionable. yenningComity already has an almost dead Cooler Master PSU. a review site blew up a RealPower 550W when loading it only for a few minutes. I've used a Cooler Master PSU but it hasn't had problems. I would go with Fortron but those aren't exactly "silent." the price you pay for silence isn't worth it. i would prefer more stable power and proper cooling than complete silence. heck, if my computer were silent, I would be scared to use the thing.

A low-watt Seasonic is cheap and quiet, for more suggestions see www.SilentPCReview.com

duly noted.

OK, yeah, quiet is more of a correct word, especially since this particular case only had one fan, and that one was in the power supply......

So, it will need to be pretty effective.....

BTW, I'm not expecting too much heat, since I'm only gonna have a video card and TV tuner in there, besides a lot of big hard drives.....

I recommend the Antec Smartpower 2.0 series. Using a SM 350W now, it's VERY quiet with only one fan running most of the time. Amps aren't bad for something that isn't too overloaded. Also, price isn't bad. Can get the 350 for about $60 CDN ($50 US?).
