If you like, go to AutoZone and they will pull the engine code for free.

They will then tell you what the code says. this does not mean that i what will fix it, but if it is something simple then this is cheaper than having to pay someone to pull the code, and again its FREE

Apparently it'll cost $800 just to turn the light off, and I figure it's not worth it. The fact it's on doesn't bother me much, and I can spend $800 on other things...

If it's only a 2001, then it's under warranty. The only person it should cost $800 to fix is the dealer, and they don't have a choice since they signed that there contract....I'd says a "glitch in the wiring" is a manufacturer's defect, and even if I do drive an econobox, I didn't pay $14k of my hard-earned money to put with "glitches" while my car is still under warranty.

with my old car, the check engine soon light was constantly on. i had my dad look at it and he said there was absolutely nothing wrong with the car, just a sensor had gone bad. maybe that is your problem.

On my way home from work tonight the light went out. I suppose retightening the gas cap fixed the problem. Will monitor.

i love all you people saying to put electrical tape or whatever over the light or otherwise ignore it. it's on for a reason. something will suffer, be it performance and/or emissions and/or fuel economy and the check engine light should never be ignored.
