Agreed, I was just putting the base price since that is what he was working with, but really the base ZL1 is like a loaded SS with a bunch more performance parts. I don't like the look of the camaro, but that car is amazing for 55k.

I agree.

What makes the Camaro worth 55k? I could put 15k into my $3500 mustang and it would run circles around a 55k Camaro.

No it wouldn't. Maybe in a straight line, but not on a track and very likely not to the same reliability standards. The ZL1 is beating the brand new GT500's with 650hp around tracks...

If you want a fast car in a straight line, the ZL1's 55k may not be worth it. If you want a beast around anything with curves, it is hard to beat it valuewise.

So you guys are rolling like that? Taking 55k cars to the track and paying 15k yearly track memberships?

Or are you spec sheet racers that polish your cars and drive to the neighborhood Sonic for thrills?

Are you serious man? With a new Camaro ZL1 you basically have a turn key race car WITH a warranty plus all the cool new modern creature comforts. At $55K, I think the ZL1 is priced pretty dang well. I'd also say the same for the GT500 at $60K.

I think they basically just buy it to drive by your house and laugh at your Mustang.

What crawled up your ass exactly? You made an absurd assertion and I countered. Who gives a shit what people do with it... The fact is that you were wrong. Not to mention you are comparing new and used car prices...which us irrelevant unless you are actually purchasing a car.

I could go buy a rusted 1992 miata for 2k, stick a small block in it for a couple thousand and lay waste to your car..clearly you overspent!!! Do you realize how stupid that argument is?

I don't know man. If I had 55k I could blow on a car (actual money in the bank not finance) then I think I'd rather have an actual race car.

And btw if you can't pay cash you can't afford it.

When exactly did this become a finance thread? We're not talking about whether people can afford things, we are talking about cars.

You remind me of a Christian who was just saved and needs to go around telling everyone how enlightened they are and how everyone is sinners. Just because you offloaded a vehicle that you couldn't afford and bought a car you could doesn't mean you need to interject that into every thread post. It gets old very quickly.

Well, it's basically a modern street legal race car with all the cool features that come with a new car. You have the power when you want it, and the modern features that make daily driving a pleasure (bluetooth connectivity, hands free phone, OnStar, etc).

And btw if you can't pay cash you can't afford it.

I wouldn't say that. I might say, if you have the money in the bank to pay it off when you'd like you can afford it. 0% financing is hard to pass up when you can have your money invested and working for you instead of dumping it all on a depreciating asset.

I made a detour. Oops. It was late and I was in crotchety mode.

I was just going off of GM's site...it's confusing. You click Camaro > models and it states flat out 'Camaro - 420hp - starts at 23k,' 'Camaro ZL1 - 580hp - starts at 54k.'

And I think we can mostly agree on the ZL1- It's fun, I'm sure. But the visibility, general practicality, and other concerns make it not terribly viable as much more than a toy.

While the Holden would be a nice alternative to that...we already have the CTS. So again, I just want them to do it very basic and hit a low price point.

Random note, I saw a GT-R yesterday. Being driven by a chick talking on a cellphone. =( The weirdest people buy some of these 'specialcars' (would that be one rank below 'super'? )

You have no idea, try living in Southern California. You'll see like an S63, M5, SL63, ML63 all being driven by old asian ladies going 60 in the slow lane. It basically amounts to someone walking into an MB dealer and asking "What's the most expensive version of this" and buying it.

My MB saleslady actually said it happens more often than you would think.

Practicality? It is a Muscle car, it achieves everything that the target audience wants while selling 100K units per year. It seats 4, has a decent sized trunk and goes like stink. Not only that, but for $55k it out-handles and out performs anything that seats 4 within $40k of its price!

It's not a toy!

The CTS only has 310HP, I have long advocated they should be putting the LS3 sans Supercharger in the CTS to make it a 420HP CTS-V lite and sell it for $45- $55K as a performance oriented version of the CTS as a $3-5k option over a comparable V6. Added cost due to larger brakes, tighter suspension & engine, mildly bolstered seats.

The SS does the above in a larger package than the CTS - They can not sell this for $45-$50K, it should base at $35k and top out at $40K until they bring out a GXP type performance version - then it can go to $45K.

#1 market for Panameras seems to be Asian females who drive at 60mph in the left lane while merging at 35mph.

I've been driving RWD cars in the snow my entire life. Most people have been driving FWD cars since the 90s though so they believe they need it.

I had more trouble with my FWD GLi than I have with my RWD RX-8. The RX-8 is an absolute blast on icy roads.

Also, I had no idea an SS sedan was on it's way. I would believe it would be pretty blah though.

Arghh...

http://www.autoblog.com/2013/02/16/this-is-your-2014-chevrolet-ss/

Much less impressed. Only 415hp (could you at least just match the Camaro Chevy) and no manual. Looks like they are going more for the luxury aspect...what are they thinking...as others have said in this forum...that is what Cadillac is for. For whatever reason the pics above look more pedestrian than the pics of the Holden I posted in the OP.

Oh well... I shouldn't be surprised.

Spoken like someone who has never driven an actual race car... because there is no way in hell anyone would ever put up with the trade offs of driving an actual race car every day.

BTW-I financed my current car when I bought it and I didn't have the money to pay cash for it. It was brand spanking new and I put zero money down on it. Financed it for 5 years at 1.9%. Never missed a payment and I've owned it free and clear for 5 years now.

Please don't make ridiculous blanket statements like that and try to pass them off as facts. It only makes you look foolish.

I'll second the meh.....

I've got a G8 GT now, and have been casually following the upcoming release of this SS.

The exterior styling of this is pretty bland....it could just as well say Lumina on the side and no one would blink an eye. And to only match the motor that was in the G8 GXP a few years ago, and take away the manual tranny, makes me think I'd just go out and buy a GXP were I in the market and have IMO a cooler looking, better car.

The interior on the SS does look nice in the pics. But I think if they had put the LT1, or somehow got 450 hp out of their LS3, and dropped it in the SS, they'd have piqued my interest a bit more. This does look more like a Taurus SHO competitor. Not real impressed. Too bad.

The ZL1 is beating the brand new GT500's with 650hp around tracks...

Not all tracks... And no drag strips....

It depends on the particular layout, length, etc. That looks like a C5 inspired post

No one argues that it's the more manageable car and the GT500 has brake issues in stock form (but then again, the ZL1 accelerates no faster than an SRT), but your blanket statement is a little over the top.

They're different styles of cars, and if you care about tracks, well, it really depends on which tracks.

If you care about a cushy ride, the ZL1 makes more sense. If you scare easily, the ZL1 makes more sense.

LT1 and a proper 6MT and I'll march down to the Chevy dealer and give them a check. Not interested in a slushbox.
