They lay eggs because thats where the actual incubation of the chick takes place. Yeah the membrane idea probably didn't work for long since its too fragile and all there is at first is just a bunch of goo and stuff. But then again it could have started out as that then developed a hard shell as the egg evolved. That could be why eggs still have that thin membrane underneath the shell. But then again snakes are born in a very tough leathery egg which is not hard. Then there's the best idea that they just evolved to hard eggs so that people can buy them at the store in cool cartons and some would be white and others would look like chocalate milk and little kids would would think they were chocalate eggs. Yeah, thats the best idea.

It might also be another survival of the fittest thing. The chicken would be able to lay more eggs over its lifetime instead of carrying all the chicks as they mature inside of her then it ends of dying or something and all the chicks die. Its easier to pump out a lot and take care of them as its making more inside its body.

This is a very interesting topic to me.

Not racist...just clarifying ....I like biology...

Not an inflamatory question at all. And you're exactly right.

That's why caucasians and asians have lighter skin than africans. once man left africa, high amounts of melanin were not necessary, as they weren't living in the equatorial plains of africa. therefore children born with less of it survived just as well as anyone else, and little by little, the average amount of melanin in the skin dropped.

it's also why eskimos are shorter as a race and have shorter limbs. in the extreme cold, it's beneficial to be shorter and have shorter limbs, as everything is closer to the heart and it's easier to keep all your parts warm. A person with long legs or arms would more easily get frostbite in the fingers and toes, and in extreme cases, such a person would more easily die from exposure.

The Human Race is "successful" therefore it has no real reason to change as a whole. This can be seen in many other species....just look at insects. They live in the millions....why change?

Possibly if/when humans move off planet...those will be forced to adapt to their new surroundings.

BTW, IMHO....some reptile thingy laid the chicken egg

I read an interesting article that talked about a possible evolutionary course for humans. It talked about how brain function and eyesight would become more important as we became more technical and relied more on computers and such with time, so it's possible that larger brains and larger, more specialized eyes might work their way into our species. It also mentioned how vocal communication and physical exertion have become less necessary, possibly giving rise to diminishing vocal abilities and smaller, leaner bodies. As has been the case for the entire course of humanity, our amount of hair would continue to decrease, eventually leaving us hairless altogether. Also, as we move off planet or as the atmosphere further degrades, we might have to adapt by evolving skin better equipped to handle either a different planet or higher UV radiation.

Eventually, the end result in the far future could be something like....well, just look at your avatar

none came first since it's a constant process of evolution. over time, specimens will constantly evolve under the rule of "survival of the fittest". of course the egg will likely be the same, but the actual specimen itself will be changed.
