Why would a nation even want an aircraft carrier now? Can't the same things be done by a missile ship?

interesting.. an Aegis destroyer costs $1.8B.
the lastest Nuclear carrier (George H. Bush) costs $6.3B.

can 3.5 Aegis destroyers do as much dmg as the squadrons of planes in the carrier?

on the other hand, an Aegis destroyer does not need a battle group to protect it.
so i guess Aegis destroyers/missle ships are more cost efficient, assuming the enemy country is within Tomahawk range.

Ships provide sea to sea coverage and mild sea to land.

Carriers provide excellent sea to air, moderate sea to sea, and excellent sea to land coverage. They are huge force projectors.

As they say around where I work, there are submarines and then there are targets.

SSGN's are recycled boomers with 141 tomahawks, you don't want one of them off your coast.

A lot of those masters/doctorate programs are here in the US. Many stay, because there's no incentive to go back. But, if China creates incentives for them to return - spending money for people capable of the innovations, rather than building ghost cities, they may go back in droves.

Re: the low quality of their education? I had a Chinese student who came to the U.S. just a few years ago. I'd be working through a very difficult calculus problem with my students, and he'd say, "I think there's an easier way" and demonstrate the problem 2 different ways, using techniques my students had never seen before. They asked him, "when did you learn that?" "I think I was 12, maybe 13." My experience is that at least some Chinese had exceptional training in mathematics.

If you look at a lot of current research in math, physics, and engineering, you're not seeing names like "John Smith" - you're seeing a lot of Indian & Chinese sounding surnames. If you look at lists of top researchers at many companies, ditto.

Having a population that's really good at math, physics, and engineering does not mean that your country has the ability to build advanced warplanes and ships. There are no engineering texbooks that will tell you how to design and build a fighter.

Do I think China could develop that ability if they made it a priority? Absolutely. But for now they seem to be focussing on growth.

http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/25/world/asia/china-aircraft-carrier-landing/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

"China announced a first on Sunday. It landed a fighter jet on the deck of an aircraft carrier built using an abandoned Soviet hull, though it may be years before the ship is fully operational. "

woah.. never knew that. Wonder why they never built one? they certainly have the $ if they're wasting it building Ghost Towns

Damn, that actually looks like an Aircraft Carrier. I thought with the description of "chines made on an old Russian hull" it would look more like a oil tanker with an air strip.

Oh god it will be like the new Red Dawn.

Except worse because China is even more advanced and funded than North Korea. :hmm:

Much much worse. Americans have listened the Gangnum Style video so many times you'd be able to communicate with Koreans. Nobody speaks chinese except for menu items.

So did USA demonstrate a new cheap manufacturing platform ? All wars require the economic power. Chinese will out perform any nation in the end in this respect.

A nation that have lots of friends who have natural resources will be the power house.

There were people in Great Britain that believed the sun would never set on their empire too.

I think wars require manufacturing power which includes resources. China would start strong but end up like Japan in WWII. Run out of gas.

I have seen photos of a "supposed" Chinese aircraft carrier but my question is how could they support one when they invest 1/10 in National Defense then we do?

There is a huge cost difference in building a carrier and supporting an operational one.

Unless the carrier is more intended for show; there is the operational costs of a support fleet and multiple types of airframes (tankers, electronics, fighters, helos, logistics, etc). Much depends on what they want the carrier to actually do. Tankers and electronics could be dropped based on mission and/or overall capabilities.

Also, what they have is a "recycled" hull; not a carrier from scratch being used as a feel good demonstration.

I realize it takes shitloads of cash to fund a Fighting group and don't forget the submarines that usually accompany any Carrier.

Given China's track record with building shit they know nothing about, I wouldn't be worried for another decade.

Hint: most of them explode.

I work on Chinese tooling a lot and their workmanship is a joke...sure it's cheap but the amount of rework it takes to get these tools running usually exceeds the cost to build them in the States.

Well, they're only trying to field 1/11 of the carriers so that probably helps

Where are the models that Revel sells in hobby shops made?

Those plans are probably being scaled up to create a group to support the carrier.
