If you consider St Louis and Detroit to be ghost cities, then by that definition no I can't deny it. But Ordos is almost 2 million people, and its one of the richest cities in China so of course they're going to overbuild. It's in the middle of nowhere and the government is desperate to get people into less populated areas.

St Louis and Detroit were built up over many many years as the population increased within each. They remain very much inhabited. A city on decline is not the same as some empty shell built for no reason other than to build it, and remain completely vacant for decades.

No one considers St Louis or Detroit ghost cities. That is not the definition of a ghost city.

A fake European town that they built for no reason except to take wedding photos

that's awesome. Though Is that part of that massive studio complex way out in the mountains? I've read that you have entire towns and cities, as well as a complete re-built forbidden city within the complex.

These "ghost" cities also have many people living there. If I build a new house and choose not to live in it, or I build a house and let my old one fall into ruin what is the difference?

One other thing to point out is these ghost cities are still under construction and very new. Nobody here wants to live in a construction zone because its really dusty and noisy. Also people wait about a year or two to move into a new house because its a long wait to get a competent contractor, and you need to take a lot of time off work to deal with then,. Also they don't trust the materials used and like to let an apartment "air out" for 6 months to get most of the contaminants out.

That fake euro village is in Huayang, just south of Chengdu. It's in a suburb of the city and I have no idea what its for. It's called Nan Hu Culture Park, whatever that means. They have lots of fake European villages and "ancient" Chinese towns everywhere. The euro towns are interesting and kind of funny but the ancient towns are really dumb.

Rain water ponding over the freshly poured slabs, wait a couple days and start framing it out.

3 year old apartment and everywhere a building water pipe runs through this is happening. I don't think any buildings will collapse but who is going to want to live here in 20 years?

And no I don't leave it like this, that's how much dry wall falls off every few days.

To be fair, I should mention that I was referring to the image in the OP:

This was an interesting tidbit on tonight's Newshour. Oh my dear god! A nation on the rise, or what?

...when I mentioned "glue." You got it, but this might confuse others. The thread title is fine. I'm disappointed in Newshour, though. Very disappointed.

Oh, I thought you were recalling my story of a few years ago where the kitchen cabinet installers were gluing the cabinets to the drywall in new construction in lieu of screws because the feather board studs were too thin to detect with a stud finder.

Nope, they just have a crap ton of land and people, so logically this makes sense. Also, the United States and many other 1st world countries pump a lot of money into China so that helps. I'd like to see some pollutant facts, and I bet China is responsible for at least 1/3 of world output of pollutants. My wife is Chinese, and she'll tell you, it's a dirty, dirty country.

Dirty you said?

Who wants to live there?

BTW, quality >>>> quantity.

Who wants to live in these apartments? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pktM__i-8IQ

Some contractors at my coworkers apartment decided that instead of running some wires around a support beam, they would just saw through it and run the wires there. Now he can't use the balcony ever again on his brand new apartment because it has no support in the middle. Some of the thinking is so ridiculously narrow minded and counterproductive.

Remind me to never leave the ground floor of buildings when I'm in China...

Yup, everything goes to the lowest bidder because they are so focused on making money. China = where they'll even kill you if they can make a dollar off of it

My wife's family all fled China to the States and Canada just to get away from all the corruption, government beat-downs (literal beatings), and pollution. They are originally from GuangZhou.

They basically owe on everything they're building. So the real question is, what happens when they default on it?

Probably what they're, allegedly, doing now with their stock market crashing.

They're not "ghost cities"... They're just "abandoned cities" -- no, seriously, they have/had issues but they appear to be coming back somewhat.

We had an electrical contractor rewire the building. The master electrician left his apprentice to do some work. Apprentice decided to saw through a giant beam in the wall -- looked like a 6" or more high beam -- to route a wire.
