Keep in mind that the memory clock speed can overcome the bus width. 128bit is not neccessarly inferior to 256bit. All depends on the memory frequency it is paired with. However, with that said, based on last generation high end parts, it probably will need to be 384bit or 512bit since I don't think were going to seed GDDR5 clock much higher than 4Ghz at this point. It will be interesting... However, the wider the bus width the more expensive the PCB. Additionally, it is possible that memory bandwidth needs do not scale linearly and perhaps we don't need 512bit + 4Ghz memory...

Possibly 384-bit memory bus on RV870?

That would be really awesome.
That is the second place I've seen so far mentioned 384-bit for the X2 part, Nordichardware 2, but they also say only 192-bit for the 5870. This sounds bad, but as others pointed out, if it still performs really well, then I won't care cause this will help keep costs down. Maybe the memory bus is not the bottleneck so why not?

i think he means 384bit for the 5870, 192bit for the 5850, 96bit for the 5770... 48bit for the 5650... The x2 model would be 2x 384bit.

And if the 5850 has 800 SPs, then performance of this chip would probably fall right in between an HD4850 and HD4870 and probably closer to the HD4870. It'll have more memory bandwidth than the 4850 but less than the 4870, but we don't know how the SPs have changed, if at all, but I assume at the very least they are just as fast as the current 4800 series.

I don't see the 384 bit bus, when paired with GDDR5 memory, being an issue. This should give the card more memory bandwidth than any card out right now.

And the R830 looks like some hybrid of a 4770/4850 (specs wise, not feature wise).

Yeah. Assuming it is GDDR5 then it meets the same specs as 4770 with 800 SPUs instead of 640.

Would that also be known as a 4870?

Not with a 128 bit bus.

Well, you could replace "memory interface" with die size, and people here go nuts about it.
