Chirping from video card?

I noticed this a couple days ago and have been searching for people with similar issues.

When I hover over links, mouse scroll, or while gaming (Dota and WoW), I can hear a chirping noise which sounds like it is coming from my xfx 5770. It's not very loud, but definitely noticeable.

When gaming it definitely happens more and is less intermittent (but it's still not a constant noise - almost sounds like loading).

I'm not positive but it sounds like it is coming from my graphics card (bad capacitor maybe?), or maybe my onboard sound?

Coil chokes have been known to "sing", but in this case I wasn't aware of any 5770s using coil chokes instead of solid state chokes. If you want to, look at your card you can see if you have a coil choke - if you do that could be the culprit.

Other things you may be hearing are PSU or your mouse (especially if Logitech G series). Both of those have been known to make similar sounds in the same situations.

Interesting, I will have to see if I can isolate the sounds. I purchased a cheap Logitech M100 mouse as a replacement to my broken MX Revolution.

I will head out later tonight to get another mouse probably.

I have a Corsair hx850. I will have to see if anyone else with these products has had similar experiences.

It's not your video card necessarily. I had the same issue with a Corsair VX450 in an older system - thinking initially it was the video card; but after stripping the whole system down to basically nothing but a PSU, MB/RAM/CPU, and a grounded chassis I found it was coming from towards the rear of the PSU.

And here's the weird part, it would only chirp under certain graphic loads; especially older SVGA mode games; and any kind of high 3d load. But depending on the game, the frequency of chirping would change.

I tried the same card out with 2 other good (at the time) PSU's and didn't have the same issue. After contacting Corsair and going over all this I got an RMA and the replacement VX450 hasn't had any problems since.

Keep in mind I had an issue with chirping specifically, not singing or whine or any other of the common types of problems reported. Corsair was very helpful seemed to realize this was a defect rather than blaming the rest of my system. I'd imagine there are some more experienced electrical engineers out there that might be able to tell exactly what interaction causes chirping in the first place.

yup i have had this kind of problem and when i eliminated the sources one by one, it always turns out to be the PSU making strange noises.

Chirp,, looks like theres birds in your VC. I would totally have to say that has to be your FAN on the video card. Try experiments. Like one time take fan speed to 50 percent another time to 100 percent and see if the chirping goes away @ 50 percent then yull know. Now you have to game at lower fan speed but dont worry the video card can take 100F and work magically so long the BGA memory chips are kept cool. Have a cool room and open side of case if you have to, to compensate for reducing fan speed. My fan speed is 56 percent at all times gaming or not gaming I cant hear it at all and everything works like a charm.

I had the HX620, it was doing it (completely isolated components to be sure), RMA'd, got back a HX650, and it does the same damn thing, especially in loading screens, most obvious in Crysis.

i have a problem of like a "grounding sound" sometimes also... and i think its the PSU
