Should the US give $$ to Vietnam for the widespread use of Agent Orange?

from a couple of weeks ago...

My vote...no. It was war, sh!t happens.

It was a war 30 years ago. Kids born today are paying the price. I guess actually being a father gives you a different perspective on things. I feel nothing but hatred for the companies that made this shit, and towards the judge that threw it out. These are innocent kids that we are screwing over. Had there been a chemical spill in the US 30 years ago and kids were all fvcked up from it today, There would be riots in the streets if a judge just threw out the case.

You two are despicable. We invaded their country and they never attacked ours. We owe them a lot.

So I had known we murdered innocent people since I was young. My dad philsophy was that If they are dead they cant kill you...It worked.Sorry the kids life is ruined but better him than my family.

Your dad was a fvcking pussy.
From the article you linked "a member of the Tiger Force had decapitated an infant."
In the My Lai massacre, over 500 men women and children were murdered in cold blood. You may think your dad is some hero, but he isn't. I would spit in his face. We could have only wished he was killed before you were created, as your arrogant attitude is why no one likes Americans.

One of the US's greatest mistakes was allowing the French to reclaim Vietnam.

Ho was (supposedly) running around with a copy of the Dec of Independence after the Japanese went down. The Allies and his resistance were on good terms. May a deal could have been worked out for Vietnamese independence in 1945, without communism?

Instead, the French got a chance to reclaim their honor.......

I hope that kid is not in any pain. As America, let's not preach about human rights and stoping the use of WMD, when we in fact have used nukes and chemical weapons on a large scale.

It is my opinion that just like "Gulf Lore Syndrome," the "Agent Orange" myth is largely just that, a myth.
That's pretty insulting to both my grandfather that served proudly in the US military, as well as all of the other soldiers that risked their lives in Desert Storm/Shield. You really think that all of them suddenly became paranoid delusional liars when they returned from combat? That's it's all one coldly-calculated scheme cooked up by some shady lawyers to extract money from the US gov't based on assertions made from some soldiers? You really amaze me with your diverse viewpoints.

Not at all.

I am saying that a percentage of returning soldiers would have come down with various cancers ANYHOW. These myths gave them something to blame them on.

There is no sound science behind Gulf Lore Syndrome. Not to mention the Agent Orange hysteria. In fact, when peer reviewed and repeated studies are done, they show NO higher incidence of cancers and other maladies among vets of these wars and the general population.

But, just like the breast implant hysteria, the myths took on a life of their own and anyone who questioned them were, and still are by your example, labeled as "insulting" and "against the troops."

Well, here's a heads up: I'm a Gulf war I era vet. My father was a WWII Vet, and my GF's father and uncle are Vietnam vets. To question my regard for veterans is absurd.

Maybe you just need to grow up?

While I can appreciate the emotions of both sides... I feel that there is one thing that was overlooked... the judge threw this out cause he interprets the law to say that the chemical companies cannot be held repsonsible for their actions under direct orders of the President during a time of war. That would be like taking every soldier who fired a bullet to court.

While there may be some moral responsibility, there is no legal responsibility according to this judge.

Actually it would be like the bullet companies get sued becuase they made the bullets. If anything, it's not the companies that made Agent Orange fault, it's the people that oked the use of it.

You obviously have no knowledge about chemical weapons. At the time of its use, Agent Orange was a herbicide and nothing more. As soon as it's deadly (or at least life altering) effects were discovered, it was immediately removed from military use. Compare that to a dirty bomb...

Once again a thread on ATOT has done nothing but serve to reveal the callousness and arrogance of our fellow Americans. Most of you pipsqueaks have never left your state, let alone own a passport, yet have no problem brushing off the plight millions of people on this planet with a flick of the wrist. I see where you learn it from - the leaders of our country do the exact same thing...

When pushed into a corner, most of you bring out the "my father was there" argument as some sort of justification for the need to gas, poison and destroy generations of people, yet fail to realize that Vietnam was a situation in which WE INJECTED OURSELVES. Your "father was there" because he was a peon ruled by a selfish and arrogant leadership. The people you should view with contempt are not the poor, disfigured people of Vietnam but the scumbags who used your father as a chess piece in their political game.

I went to Vietnam this summer, and I'll tell you - they were such welcoming and warm people. Despite 1/100th of the education opportunities and experience we have here, most of the population, unlike you morons, have the intellectual depth to understand the political dynamic that led to this. They don't blame your fathers, they blame our leaders. Why don't you?

Mr. Carrico,

And, pray tell, who are this 270 million? Finish that last homework assignment for your Hooked-on-Phonics course and then reread what I wrote. It is clear that I address those who callously and arrogantly dismiss the damage done in Vietnam either becuase (1) they see it as a justification for the preservation of their family members who were unnecessarily placed into the situation and/or (2) who feel that some people's lives are not worth as much as their own.
