Lot of good points on here. Being a father myself and a bit on the financially struggling side, I can relate to this thread. Fortunately, my kids are too young right now to be affected by the demonic evil that is advertising. But we're trying to raise them to appreciate what they have and not covet the supposed hot items. It'll be tough though. Our society has become so material driven. I hate it. Even people my age are going crazy for the Wii and the PS3. Can't we find better things to spend $400 on? No wonder the country has debt problems.

A business can produce as many or as few of a product as they want, surely...

People don't need these new systems, they just seem to think they do. Blame our materialistic, gotta-have-the-latest-gadget society.

I hate this as well. I personally think it should be illegal. Ebay should have some sort of policy on individuals selling 10, 15 of one item. IE: only "ebay stores" with some sort of business license should be able to have more then 2 auctions with the same item. I also think stores need to learn to limit this kind of behavior with "Limit 1(or 2) per customer", and not per visit either.

Stupid scalpers should diaf.

The "making it illegal" part or the "scalpers should diaf" part?

Why? Scalper envy is nothing more than economic ignorance.

It's called capitalism, and if people are stupid enough to pay 3-4x retail for some item just so they can have it NOW, then so be it. It's easy to part a fool and his money, and I for one, will be there to take advantage of all the fools I can.

Coming from someone with no kids. Try reasoning with an 8 year old who sees and reads all the marketing for an item + feels all the peer pressure from his school mates.

I was just using this as an example. Obviously not the same thing.

I disagree- if your behavior is preventing someone from buying something they want through intended means, then that's being a jerk.

I went to Toys R Us today to check out some stuff that my kid wanted for Christmas. While there, some dorky looking guy was buying their entire stock of Lego Star Wars Star Destroyers (at $99/pop). At the checkout the lady asked him what he was going to do with all these, and he said they were going to be in demand, so he was going to sell them on Ebay.

People that do this kind of crap are creating a false shortage. Kids want this kind of stuff for Christmas to make their dreams come true, and money grubbing jerks come along to take what they want away was was intended to be available from normal retailers and essentially force you to buy it from "the black market" (my new name for Ebay during Christmas).

Cliffs: People buying toys to resell, making false shrotages should be shot

So, don't buy this stuff on ebay. Wait until supply catches up with demand.

Ding, ding, ding! The cashier at Toys R Us should have denied him the sale. It makes sense for them actually. While the store sold all of its stock, they have annoyed customers who will take their business elsewhere (Fritzo, among others) which includes purchasing additional toys beyond the Star Wars one.

If it's that in demand, they will sell them all.

If Christmas hadn't devolved into a celebration of greed and materialism, this wouldn't be a problem.

What I dont get is, why don't stores/Microsoft/Sony take advantage of this? Not saying I want them to, but if I were gonna sell something for $400 that people were going to shell out $1000's for at first, I'd want a cut of that action as a business owner. I'd sell the thing for $500, lets say... for a week or two until the initial gimme-gimme's got their units and then back the price back down. Are stores not allowed to charge more than MSRP on these consoles? I just find it odd that, considering the extreme demand, they're not upping the offering price.

Like, you KNOW Best Buy isn't gonna have any PS3's in stock after that first day. Hell, after the first... what, eight minutes? They could totally charge more! But they don't.

Hasn't Worst Buy tried to bundle high interest items with other stuff to increase the sale? I seem to remember that happening not too long ago.

I'll bet there will be. I can remember even 2 years ago, every store I looked at had NO console systems for sale. Everything was sold out.

Not to say there werent some on-line that could be had, but remember not everyone will even shop on-line.

Ah yes, the eternal debate of what you can do vs. what you should do. I don't really have a preference, but I will say that most of the people I get along with are the "what you should do" kind of people.

I believe that sony and other companies sell to major retailers under the condition that they resale it for the specified price, I don't know this for sure though.
