I smoked pot once. It was an interesting experience to say the least. Not sure if I'd do it again or not, I think a lot of it would depend on who I was with.

I've never smoked cigs and have committed to never smoking them(or any tobacco)

I don't like cigs, but I do enjoy some nice pipe tobacco or a good cigar occasionally.

Curiosity, experimentation, and a little peer pressure.
Everybody I've ever met that smokes started doing it long before they were 18.

basically cause I like it...

I've smoked for years, and I don't do anything else, no drinking, no drugs etc...

I enjoy it, I like the feeling of that high you get, especially when I first wake up in the morning with my coffee, the nictotine hasn't been in my system for quite a few hours and you get a great high off of it...

then for whatever reason it does go great after a good meal, it's like the perfect ending...

I don't smoke, but I have some opinions on why people smoke

First of all, nicotine is addictive. So "why do people continue smoking" should be obvious, they're already addicted to nicotine.

Nicotine is a chemical able to relax most people. It helps you "take the edge off" as it were. Most people feel calmer after a cigarette, even non-smokers. It's an effective way to remove some stress (although it's expensive and I feel there are better ways).

Nicotine is also an appetite depressant (you feel less hungry). As such, people who smoke can sometimes look thinner, and thus more attractive to people that may have been interested in smoking anyway. It's a psychological thing; see attractive person smoking, now you want to smoke too. Obviously if you overeat anyway and don't just eat when you're hungry then you'll be fat anyway, but smoking cigarettes does reduce your appetite.

And then there's the spartan philosophy, die young so you still look beautiful. Although I doubt many people use this as an excuse to start smoking...

The money I waste on hookah tobacco could buy me a brand new computer.

The money I blow on whores could buy me a new Volvo.

first, it's out of curiosity. then you get addicted. the chemicals in cigarettes make your cells unable to excrete waste properly. blerh.

Solely out of addiction after you try them? I've tried Marlboro, L&M, and Newports, they all taste like shit to me and I've got no desire to try them again. Tried cloves once though, really good.

Most tobacco tastes like shit with the exception of some hookah and pipe tobacco. I smoke and hate the taste and smell, however, when your hooked it does provide a nice feeling. Also for the first 3-6 months they give you a really nice buzz.

It also relieves some stress and can boost your concentration for a short period(no links just my opinion). Now I'm not saying that people should smoke I'm just listing my reasons (and I can't quit).

You only get the nice feeling because it brings you off of a low back to where you would have been anyways if you didn't smoke.

Kreteks don't taste nasty at all, gone through a pack of Blacks, gonna try Specials. Plus, I've been hooked on hookah for a year. It's the normal cigarettes and cigar smoke too that baffles me, I tried a ~$4 cigar in the Middle East and almost gagged; and if a cigar's gotta cost $20 to taste good then I'd rather buy a $20 tin of hookah tobacco.

"Because it's my goddamn fucking right to be able to say 'because I want to' so get out of my face."

A phrase that I heard one person say to a whining passer-by on the sidewalk who stopped, interrupted our conversation, just to ask that same silly question.

When I was smoking, I enjoyed it. The actual sensation of smoking a ciragrette was emjoyable. What you taste when smoking a cigarette isn't the same as the smell and taste you get if you don't smoke.

That said, now that I don't smoke anymore, and haven't since January 1st, it is disgusting, and they smell horrible. I still get a small craving every once in a while, just to have the feeling of smoking again, but I know they will taste and smell like shit now that I've quit.

 I agree. If you want to smoke, smoke. If you don't, don't. Either way, people need to shut the fuck up and quit forcing their opinion on others. Educate kids, let them know it is bad for you, etc, sure. But let adults make up their own damn mind.

Cause they tried em and liked em. It's called addiction. Some of us aren't as prone to it.

i don't really see why ppl like it, i think i smoke maybe 1 cig every few months. sometimes when i'm out clubbing/drinking i'll decide i need to smoke (this also usually leads to me getting a sore throat!)

when I was in Shanghai over dec I chain smoken when I was out with friends, everybody in china smokes. I guess I just don't really have an addictive personality, my weakness is good food not alcohol/cigs.

Yes I smoke about 3~5 cigs a day. I used to smoke over a pack a day but i'm almost 30 and have been smoking for most of the last 15 years. I have made a conscious effort to reduce my smoking because I know it is bad for my health and I feel worse when I smoke more cigs.

Why haven't I quit for good? = I am addicted to nicotine for multiple reasons (mental and physical). There are times that I really enjoy tobacco use, other times I smoke b/c I'm stressed, hungry, or have to poop. While drinking it's almost always social and I light up a smoke b/c my buddy, or the cute chick at the end of the bar just did.

In the work world I noticed that smokers can step outside for a 5~10 minute break a few times a day no questions asked. Non-smokers can't just tell the boss I'll be back 10 mins. I feel like going out side to screw around.

For me it is the money. I am way way too stingy to be dependent on something like that.

i dont really like cigarettes because they are such a horrid form of tobacco...but they are pretty relaxing and ive found a few that i enjoy the taste of.

i really, really love pipes and cigars and just about any pure tobacco. its really not very harmful and it taste fantastic and is relaxing. if i could find a way to make pipe smoking easy and convenient like cigarettes are then everyone would be smoking them. i've got friends who loath tobacco who (after years of convincing) i get them to puff on one of my pipes and the love it to death...tobacco is such a wonderful and interesting plant...
