why certainly it can!

IOS 11.3 had NAT included I believe. BUT, it depends on how much memory and flash the router has. If i remember 2501 only has one ethernet port?

PM me or post in networking forum.

<edit> btw, 2501 can't handle much NAT or traffic over 256 kbit. very old under powered router, the soho stuff is WAY faster.

............

how does the performance compare to lets say... a linksys rotuer or a netgear

Hope you don't think I'm hijacking your thread, but I'm kind of in the same boat. I was thinking of getting a 25xx or something else cheap to do the natting of my cable...well more as an excuse to buy a real router to play with as the simulators are starting to get old.

One thing i thought of though, is that my cable is DHCP and was wondering if you could set an interface to be a DHCP client? As far as I know you can't...but my cisco knowledge doesn't stretch very far Is it possible, or no?

thanks

I think instead of assigning an ip for the eth0 interface, you can DHCP the mofo.... not sure tho....

phatcow,

post specs of your 2501. when you boot it have a console connection to the console port and post the results of the boot. If you want to know details of flash and such type "show version". the flash and ram are very important, you may not be able to run a 12.0 image or even 11.3 for that matter.

thanks for posting here BTW, lots of good network geeks here. i'm going to bed.

I believe that ip auto configure (pull an IP address from another source) is only available when you're using PPP via dial-up or ISDN.

You would probably have problems doing NAT with a 2501. You are correct that it only has one Ethernet interface. To do NAT you have to have an "inside" and an "outside" interface and you can't use the same one (that I know of).

If you want to try this out, you'd be a lot better off getting a 1605. That's got two Ethernets and a FlexWAN slot - Far better than what a 2501 would give you.

could do subinterfaces on the 2500 enet port, but man that is making it way more complicated thean it should be. one-armed router kindof thing.

Well, in all reality ANY Cisco is overkill for this kind of thing. A small router like a Barricade will really do everything you need, be far easier to setup and cost 1/10th the price.

If you have a Cisco router with 1 Ethernet port then you can't do NAT since it won't allow NAT inside and outside on the same interface. Several people have tried to hack around this but no one has been succesful. By hack I mean funky loopback, policy route type tricks. With 11.2 and 11.3 you need IP PLUS feature set for NAT. I don't think 11.3 IP had it (may be wrong) but 12.0 IP had NAT included.

Subinterfaces ... if you are doing VLAN tagging are allowed.

If you try it you get this:

"Configuring IP routing on a LAN subinterface is only allowed if that subinterface is already configured as part of an IEEE 802.10, IEEE 802.1Q, or ISL vLAN."

I have a similar setup. My cable comes into a LinkSys 4 port with DHCP disabled. I have my 2 main PCs off that at 100meg FD. I have a 10 meg link between the LinkSys and a Cisco 800 router.
The Cisco 800 router is where I hook my laptop up and friends jack in. Cisco has DHCP server running.

Starting with IOS 12.1(2)T the LAN interface can get its IP via DHCP. In previous IOS versions they supported that on WAN interfaces (ip address negoatied).

See the recent results from the hub vs switch test if your debating between the two. ScottMac is thread author.
