What do you guys think it will be like? More of the same. but prettier? Or are there any major revisions to the gameplay they've been touting?

I've been living under a rock (apparently), and have never played a game in this series.

Interested, I went to the official website only to find out that they don't have a demo available.

Awesome marketing.

I hated civ3. But Civ2 was awesome, i wont be picking Civ4 up for no Civ can top 2, except maybe civ1. SMAC was ok at best tho. They need a demo for 4.

Using the Pirates' engine, I'm hoping for the best with this game. There's no question I'm jumping on board this thing when it becomes available. I only hope my laptop will run it okay.
Civ2 was best, Civ3 was mediocre improvement, and Alpha Centauri was pretty fun, but I got completely frustrated with the mold destroying my infrastructure.

I am thinking alot of the game will be different. I agree though, I thought Civ 2 was better.

First review is up now. Sounds promising.
The first thing you need to understand is that Civilization IV is a fundamental reinvention of the franchise. Fans should be assured that all the basic concepts from Civilization are still here, but many of the more obnoxious or troublesome elements have been greatly improved upon. City production, combat, and culture have all been tweaked to allow for more intuitive application within the game. Concepts like civil disorder, predictable tech paths, pollution and the creeping pace of the late game have all benefited from substantial revisions that make them more manageable and enjoyable aspects of your strategy.

Same here, I spent many hours playing Civ3.

Civ2 is an undeniable classic, and SMAC was a blast to play, even if the only worthwhile faction was the University.

I have high hopes for Civ4.

I kind of liked the game, but really, after beating it twice, I got bored with it.
It seemed like a very minor improvement. I also got flummoxed with the insane number of Civ2 clones/adaptations that were released after Civ2. I had a friend who played some of them nonstop, but I just couldn't get into them for some reason or another.

Civ3 had eye candy and 'culture', but the latter just seemed like a money-saving cheat. I didn't have to subvert a city, it'd capitulate to my faction just because I rocked. I was always a big fan of playing defense and subverting neighbors.

I'm just hoping Civ4 has better replayability than Civ III.

I never played Civ1 or 2 but civ3 is hard to play but I finally made it. I think I am going to try civ4 when it comes out.

System requirements: (link)

MINIMUM

* Windows 2000/XP with SP1 or higher
* Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon CPU with at least 1.2 GHZ
* 256 MB RAM
* 64 MB graphics card with Hardware T&L (GeForce 2/Radeon 7500 or better)
* DirectX 7 compatible soundcard
* DVD-ROM drive
* 1.7 GB free hard disk space

RECOMMENDED

* Windows XP with SP1 or higher
* Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon CPU with at least 1.8 GHz
* 512 MB RAM
* 128 MB graphics card with DirectX 8 support (pixel- and vertex shaders)

Looks like there won't be a CD-rom version. I'm liking this trend. I think I still have the floppies from Civ1 somewhere...

UPDATE: IGN is up with the first review, as they often are. They gave the game a 9.4.

While I tend to find them a bit overzealous and fanboyish, I sure as hell hope they're right.

Yep, been keeping an eye on this, having been a huge Civ fan ever since I first played Civ I on my trusty Amiga 600

I also liked Civ III, though it doesn't compare to I of course, Civ I was without a doubt the best, which is largely due to the fact that it was the first of course
What I would like is for the AI's to be a bit more sane, playing at anything above easiest or second easiest difficulty levels always resulted in everyone hating me after a while, so they'd constantly attack me even if I had a military 10x larger, get their asses kicked, lose some land, come begging for peace, then attack me again

Already preordered it.

Hope to have a life after it gets here.

I am a fan of turn based strategy games. Hated CIV3 and MOO3. CIV4 looks like a winner and I can only hope there will be a MOO4!

I'm afraid that Civ4 might be enough to break my WoW addiction. I was going to hold off on getting it for a few months, but I don't know if I can hold off. 49.99 with a $10 GC @ CC this week makes it really hard to pass up.

From the IGN review:
Civilization IV has done away with separate attack and defend values for each unit in favor of a single power rating. While that simplifies the combat system a bit, there are plenty of other specializations that come into play that add a lot of variety to the system. Spearman, for instance, gain a substantial bonus against mounted units. Archers gain bonuses when defending hills or cities. Archers also get the First Strike power, giving them a chance to take out enemy units before they take any damage themselves. Mounted units typically have a chance to withdraw from combats if they find themselves on the losing end of the combat.

Each unit that wins a fight earns experience points that can be used to buy promotions. These run the gamut from simple power bonuses against certain types of units, or in certain types of terrain, to more sophisticated bonuses like the ability to heal nearby units or perform amphibious attacks. This system not only encourages greater specialization of your units but also makes you feel more invested in them. Believe me, you'll think twice before you send your amphibious assaulting cavalry who have a 25% bonus against melee units against an enemy's island stronghold. Still, they're the best unit for the job, so...

One of the consequences of this system of unit promotion is that it makes it harder to take cities with a handful of units. Each failed attack just gives the defenders more experience points to spend on promotions. In a strange way, the longer it takes you to capture a city, the harder it can become. The game offers up a few ways to work around this problem, however. First, the experience system rewards attackers more than defenders, so holding off an enemy won't earn you as many promotions as taking the offensive will. Artillery will also help out, not by damaging the defenders inside a city (which it can't do) but by diminishing a city's defense bonus.

Artillery can damage units outside of cities however, and, depending on the right promotions, can even hurt enemies in adjacent squares. The cool thing about catapults this time around is that they attack every single unit in a stack. This discourages players from simply putting all their units right on top of one another and maneuvering en masse. Since artillery can be so devastating to grouped units, you'll find that it makes more sense to spread your forces out.

Read the IGN review and the reviews at CivFanatics and I'll be picking up my copy tomorrow. I went with the preorder version at EB Games after seeing that no one was having it on sale this week.

<-- Not interested in Circuit City gift card offer

Yes, as it to be expected for a title that supports multiplayer.

Turn based tactical combat is many things, but quick is not one of them.

Civ III was the first civ i ever bought...ther others i got from my cousin and Civ II was the best out of the series. Alpha Centauri was alright but too much like Starcraft for my liking. When it comes out at a decent cost i might pick it up.
