Cloning a Hard Drive

I'm upgrading a friend's computer with a RAID 0 setup. He wants me to simply clone his old hard drive to the new one. Can someone tell me if this is possible, and if so, supply simple, detailed and easy to follow step by step instructions on how to do it?

Thanks

Yeah, you can definitely do this... you will need a program called 'ghost'

Here, I've taken the liberty to link ya up

Symantec Ghost

A really reliable prog

<< Symantec Ghost Corporate Edition 7.0 is a tool for PC deployment, recovery, cloning, and migration. It reduces IT costs by streamlining the configuration and management of networked workstations. Administrators can deploy or restore an OS image or application onto a PC in minutes and migrate user settings and profiles to customize the PC. >>

Basically an all in one solution, you shouldn't have any problems with this.

Just install the prog and view the read me... it's so simple to do that I'm even capable of such actions

Here's a thread at the General Hardware Forum just in case you need some assurance

Step-by-step ghost

Good luck

Thanks, GG! Hopefully it's easy I'll have him backup all his important stuff twice just to be sure!

<< Ghost requires that the destination drive be at least as large as the source drive. >>

It will be. The destination drive will be two 40GB drives in RAID-0 (80GB) and the source drive is a 14GB drive.

Wrong. Ghost only requires that the partition of the old will have room for the actual data on the new drive.

IE: you have a 10 GB drive with 5 GB used, and you ghost it to a 7GB drive, it will work, as long as you are defragged.

Believe me, i do it all the time at work. Our spare drives are all 6.4GB and i have ghosted up to a 10GB drive onto it.

1) Get Cloning Machine.
2) Place hard drive in Cloning Machine.
3) Close door.
4) Press the button marked "CLONE".
%) Enjoy your new clone drive!

I can't believe you are even CONSIDERING tampering with the universe that God has provided us! Ask yourself, will your harddrive have a soul? Can a harddrive exist without a soul? Will God accept your harddrive? YOU WILL SURELY BURN IN HELL!

Actually, I use Norton Ghost all the time. It works like a charm. It works best and fastest if the original and target drives are on separate IDE channels (duh). If you so desire, it can image and split a harddrive into however many 650MB pieces you need so you can burn it ALL to CD. I love my Ghost!

OK, but what if one drive (two drives acting as one) is on a RAID card, and the other on an IDE channel? Ghost will still find both drives?

And yes, my hard drive will burn in hell, simply because of all the pictures of naked ladies and games with senseless violence within it's data

When you copy the image with the program it will basically only see one other drive to write to. The RAID setup will deal with sending the data to both physical drives.
My question is. About 2 months ago I made a disk image of my hardrive that I thought was crashing. I RMAed the drive and when Maxtor replaced it they had sent me a 60 gig instead of a 14.3 gig which I RMA'd. When I loaded the image it made the larger drive look like a 14.3 gig drive as well.

This was done without fdisking the new drive or anything because when I ddi fdisk the image copy would freeze and die.

I thought It was Norton Ghost I used but possibly partition magic.

Anyone know a way around this little issue or does Norton surely not give those kinds of problems?

What version of Ghost are you using? In the ghost screen, in which you boot from floppy, it gives you the option to change the size of the partitions to fit the HDD.
