First one was pretty fun.

Also, Half-Life 3 confirmed?

So no shakey cam in this one? Might actually be watchable.

Looks like they screwed with the color balance though, as is now tradition. Teal and orange.

I was going to say that new TV screens could get away with just blue and red phosphors, and ditch the unused green completely, but then you couldn't watch any gloomy-future movies like The Matrix, since they're usually green-tinted.

Last I heard they were still planning on the sequel and they just had to get 3 guys in a room together to talk it out. I'm glad they've already done so much.

I can't remember if I liked the first one or not. Must not have left a big impression on me.

This looks really good though.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first one, but I can understand people not liking the shaky cam, but the perspective was refreshing IMHO. And I thought the story and plot were great. A well done story. Award-winning? No. But for what it was, a monster movie, it was great.

I still haven't seen the new Godzilla, and I want to. Curious how it will compare with what I remember of my theater experience with Cloverfield. And Cloverfield is a movie that really begged for the theater experience to truly grasp the perspective, as while many films can be enjoyed perfectly fine at home, I feel the immensity of the audio and visual experience greatly added to the sense of dread, especially thanks to the hand-held cam approach, and feeling like it could just as easily be you. Some people complained about the acting or choices made, but I truly believe, psychologically, to be in their shoes, it all felt incredibly natural. Definitely for a flick for everyone, but I can't stress how much I enjoyed it. It felt so real in ways that a monster movie usually cannot even approach.

Looking forward to what they do with the monsters, their design, and how they expand on their story.

Also, this comes as a complete surprise. I had no idea this movie was even in the works. And then a trailer drops in mid-January for a March premier. Holy shit.

The last godzilla pretty much sucked, and I was even amped up for it when it came out.

It's pretty fail.

Actually, I would still label that one as an Epic Fail.

I'm assuming it can't be worse than the Matthew Broderick one, right?
(the best thing to come out of that was the Kashmir sampled Puff Daddy song. :awe

Granted, I'll forever admit to completely loving that movie, but, it was not a great film.

Watch it at your own risk and judge for yourself I guess.

The first Cloverfield was awesome, especially on the big screen. This one looks good in a totally different way, though. Is it even possible for John Goodman to make a bad movie?

Yep, I remember seeing Cloverfield when it first came out. It was awesome. Seems like seeing movies on a big screen makes seeing them on a small screen just so moot and pointless. But so many movies I've seen in theatres I haven't bothered watching at home because I don't feel the need to watch them again, even if they were great movies.

This isn't a sequel. This movie takes place in the same 'universe', but it is not a direct sequel. Different storyline more or less like The Room or Misery is what it is thought to be, but with some twists around the Cloverfield timeline. At least, according to JJ.

Also, loved Cloverfield.

So... a sequel?

Don't care much about the hair splitting, Cloverfield was pretty good, too much shaky cam, but whatever.

the first was great, way better than godzilla

Christ, Ishtar was better than Godzilla.

I really liked the original Cloverfield, shaky camera and all and would have been happy to see Cloverfield 2. But this looks like a "let's capitalize on name recognition" thing, I don't think it's going to have anything in common with the original other than the name.

If it doesn't have space monsters...not a sequel. It seems to be a personality drama, of course...no one really knows for sure.

Which is what the first one was, I mean you didn't even really see the monster until the end.

space monsters? Talking about what may have dropped out of the sky at the end of the first movie? It was never confirmed that the intent was for that to be an actual monster, but it certainly, in terms of portrayal, was meant to inspire that vision in the audience. But it was also suggested it was a satellite, as that was discussed I guess in the film but also on a viral marketing website that covered the company that owned the satellite. A satellite or part of a satellite did fall in the story, but what we saw is another matter. What was intended for you to think you saw is certainly a monster, but they have the story to have that not be the case if they wish to go that route.

There will be monsters, or at least a monster, or else it wouldn't be Cloverfield at all, and to name it that would be a grave mistake in my eyes.

It's going to be a difference approach, sure, but I think the main attraction will be the safety of the outside world. We just see the tease so far of them fearing the outside world, but I suspect more of the movie will center around the actual outside experiences and not just the fear of it.

But I think it will be more of a drama than the survival POV of the first film, that much seems for certain. Which is why I think Abrams is calling it more of a blood relative to the movie as opposed to an outright sequel. A sequel to Cloverfield conjures up the notion of that direct survival/escape with a monster at the heart of a big city. I think it will be a different view, a different take on the concept, but I cannot imagine it not starring the monsters in the Cloverfield universe.
