CM Hyper212+ vs CM V8

I am confused by reviews on the CoolerMaster V8. Price-wise, it is a significant step up from my Hyper212+. Performance-wise, however, some reviews say it is a disappointment, some say it is great.

FrostyTech ranks the V8 in their K8 temperature tests near the top. However, it also shows just 1C difference over the Hyper212+ (but nearly 4C difference over the original Hyper212; note the missing "+")

1C difference seems paltry considering the price gap, and some reviews have actually not been too kind to the V8.

I am hesitant to "upgrade" my Phenom II X4 965 from a Hyper212+ to the V8, which costs nearly half as much.

Can anybody offer their opinions about upgrading from a Hyper212+ to a V8?

The 212+ Is pretty much THE budget cooler to get right now. Price/performance is through the roof. If you're going to step up, make it something significant, Like a Megahalems or something. Or try some different fans on the 212; I wasn't a big fan of the original one.

Since you already have the Hyper 212+, I don't believe there is any reason whatsoever for you to "upgrade" to the V8. Whether it is 1°C or 4°C, what would having temperatures lowered by that amount get you? You don't get some kind of award for being a more hardcore enthusiast, and you likely won't even get appreciably higher overclocks or lower noise levels.

Now, here's an alternative: Add a second fan to your Hyper 212+. They should all come with a second set of fan mounts if it uses the plastic fan retensions. Having fans in push/pull will lower temperatures, especially with the Hyper 212+ because the fin spacing is really tight.

That was what I was hoping to get, significantly lower temps for higher overclocks. Without that, then this is indeed useless. I was hoping that the V8 actually does offer significant performance (reviews are mixed, and googling it shows more disgruntled users than there are glowing professional reviews) I even saw a review or two where in an OC scenario, it was neck and neck with a TRUE. Hence my confusion as to whether it would actually be an "upgrade" or not.

I already did, and in a push/pull configuration, pointed upwards (case is CM 690, two exhaust fans at the top; there is another exhaust at the rear, which is where the hyper212+ could also been pointed at).

I've always found temps to be better pointed towards the back than towards the top. YMMV, tho.

It used to be pointed towards the back, and the three fans were almost exaclty aligned to each other (2 on the Hyper 212+, and the rear fan). When I disassembled it and put it back again (put new thermal paste, used to be CoolerMaster high-performance thermal grease, now a Tuniq TX-2), I tried pointing it upwards towards the 2 top exhaust fans. I didn't notice a difference in temps at all, so I decided to just let it stay that way, at least until I disassemble it again.

I have both coolers. The V8 is wasted by not having the direct heatpipe contact of the Hyper 212. I wish that the Hyper212 had the fin array of the V8. Want significantly lower temps? lower the ambient air temp. I have my comp (on a testbed) by an open window.

i have both as well. -- the 212+ is good for it's price (budget) -- the v8 is "ok" but not in top tier of effective coolers and it is somewhat priced too high imo.

forget either, there's a new champ in town for perf/dollar: Zalman CNPS10X Performa, top of the line performance for budget price.
