New computer build..........Turned on the system and I get the CMOS Checksum Error--System Set to Default.

System locks at that point. Even though it says F1 to continue or DEL to enter startup.

HELP???????

Here is what i could find online CMOS checksum error - Defaults loaded :
Checksum of CMOS is incorrect, so the system loads the default equipment configuration. A checksum error may indicate that CMOS has become corrupt. This error may have been caused by a weak battery. Check the battery and replace if necessary.
Hope this helps

This can happen after a failed BIOS flash. You might be able to reset the BIOS by adjusting mobo jumpers with the help of the manual.

happens sometimes
take ou everything but HDD CPU 1 stick ram vidcard
unplug from wall, short cmos pins. take out battery
wait 30 min minimum.
put battery back in, unshort cmos pins plug back in PSU
turn on pc and go directly into bios and set to failsafe defaults - try to boot

Hi, Bozo has it right, but 30 min probably wont let the caps discharge enought to dump the BIOS. Wait a couple of hours before putting the bat back. Better yet, find the bat jumper and move the jumper to reset it. Check your MB manual if you have it. The jumper disconnects the bat and shorts out the caps to discharge them. Only takes a few seconds. Both methods must be done with the power removed either at a switch on the back of the PS or if no switch, pull the plug. Jim

Hello,

First post here, and this was the only relevant topic to my problem that had a solution. I am currently in the process of Bozo's suggestion and heres my situation:

I was installing a new fan/heatsink for my AMD Athlon 2500+ CPU. I took the old heatsink out, took the cpu out and cleaned it with rubbing alcohol. Then I put it back on, put the new heatsink on and turned the PC on. First it gave me a "CPU is unworkable or has been changed" and at the top, it lists my CPU as a AMD Athlon 1100Mhz. So.. after a couple of restarts, I took the new heatsink , fan off, to make sure everything was good, and then put it back in. I cleared the CMOS by taking the battery out for 10 secs. When I put it back in, I got a "CMOS Checksum Error"

Anything I should try? I tried discharging the CMOS by changing the jumper on my mobo to the discharge position for a few minutes too but that didn't seem to do anything. I am rightnow trying out bozo's suggestions.

Is there anything else I should do? I just hope my CPU isn't fried.

I can't access anything as my PC locks after loading the startup bios (locks at start after listing the error and the message "Press F1 to continue. Press DEL to enter setup", nothing happens if i press on any of them).

I'm not sure if this will help you at all, but I was under the impression that removing and reinstalling an AMD cpu was NOT a good idea. It was something about them being very fragile.

As far as the CMOS checksum error, a NEW battery will most likely fix the problem in most cases. In your case, Shakko, I'm not sure this will help much.

Your problem before was that your FSB was at 100mhz instead of 166mhz. You just change that in BIOS.

To clear CMOS you just need to move the jumper with the power supply unplugged, not take the battery out. Make sure you have it in securely.

As for your error... does it freeze up, or does it just not let you enter anything? Check your keyboard connection again.

The danger with athlon XPs is damaging the core during heatsink installation. If you're careful, you should be able to change them out as many times as you want to.
