The general problem with news is actually the same as with anything else for mass consumption, such as entertainment. The cheap stuff which satisfies the lowest common denominator like reality tv is easy, while anything worthwhile is expensive a la hbo. Except with news it's even harder to get enough people to pay the equivalent of $15/month in attention span. Even harder in the US with the GOP cutting public broadcaster (production) budgets.

A problem particular to political news is that we tend to be very stubborn about our ideals in these realms, esp when they conflict with reality. Whereas a fictional series can cater to or at least dance our tropish concepts of what certain folks should be like, most people don't enjoy it when the facts run counter to what they've long believed. This is obviously more of a problem with the right wing these days, but hardly unknown with the left. For example, the same people who condemn the nationalism of others often hold faith we're the good guys themselves.
