Coax signal determination

So, about a year and half ago, I moved into my new place. I had the TV set up in the same position as the previous owners, but just recently finally got my wife to cave into the idea of a media room (aka man-cave).

Even though there is a coax cable run to the media room, the previous owner has multiple coax cables running through the walls. We also have a suite that has a cable connection to confuse things. Now ... I want to watch TV again, but I have no way of figuring out which cable is connected to which cable without guessing and testing.

Fast forward--->I have guess and tested, and still can't get the signal downstairs. How can I test the cables for a signal? Is there a tool I could rent, borrow or steal that would help me to identify which coax cable is which?

The cheapest way is to disconnect all equipment from the cables . Get two of these type couplers http://akamaipix.crutchfield.c...03/043/h043585635p.jpg

Cut off an old coax cable end, strip the wires and twist them together. Screw that on the cable you want to find the other end too using the coupler. Now on the other end where all the cables are take the meter set it to continuity and place a probe on each center conductor and outer, the meter will sound when you have the right one.

One of these might do the job too. It has two pieces - one emits a signal over the cable line, and the other can detect it and beep at you when the signal is coming through. Connect the signal generator to your man cave, and then go plug in each line at your box until you find the other end.

Cable guys also have these tools. You may want to contact your cable company to find out if they are willing to come connect that room for you.
