there ya go...a 98.5 at a public school that weights grades doesn't stand up very well at Northwestern level college

I don't know about that, my older brother had a 98 gpa and he was accepted into Northwestern (but he didn't go). Also, my hs is one of the best public schools in the area.

well, " one of the best" public high schools doesn't compare too well to competetive private schools

I disagree, I went to a public high school where a large number of people each year went to top privates, ivies, and publics like UC Berkeley. They don't differenciate much between a great publics and privates.

Georgetown, SUNY Binghamton, Boston U, NYU, U Chicago, Georgetown, and Johns Hopkins

Keep in mind northwestern is #12 in the nation, so don't take it too hard on yourself. You have to remember how many close to perfect SAT scores and 4.0's you were up against. I'd say you should make NYU, Boston U, SUNY, and Georgetown given that your extra cirriculars and essays were pretty good. I don't really understand the weighting of your gpa though, were you close to a 4.0 w/out weights? Or did you get a lot of weights to push you up?

I would think that it would be low to mid 90s without the weights. I guess I can take satisfaction in the fact that it was a reach school so it isn't too big a deal.

give me a break...when a public school can pull an ACT aberage of 29.5, you can come to me then and say that a college doesn't look at the students grades between the private and public school. i think my being at a HS which had an ACT average that high, compared to a public school which is at 22 is a big difference partner

It really depends on what school you go to. Plus, I would think that private schools have a lot more of the upper teir students while public schools need to cater to everyone.

YES...EXACTLY....thats why a 3.5 at a top private school means a hell of a lot more than a 3.5 (heck, 4.0 for that matter) at a top public school

I don't think so, because you are compared to other applicants based on the average of the applicants, not your schools average

Yea, and when you comapre applicants, a student that has a 3.5 at a top private school will mean a hell of a lot more than a student who has a 3.5 at a public school..thats exactly what ims aying.. they weigh the competitiveness and rpestige of your school to weight different candidates..at least top tier colleges do

::shrug:: I was accepted to one of the top engineering private schools and one of the top public engineering schools, I guess I didn't analyze it.

I'm not talking about your average run of the mill public school, some are completely different. Two schools near me (Gunn and Monta Vista) were over 70 percent asian which is pretty much academic competition at its worst. My friend there had a 1590 800/800/800 on his SAT's and still couldn't set the curves in his classes. And besides, many public schools (such as mine) were pulled down because of many of the poorer students who went there. When you're taking AP's though you are in a completely different level of student.

Not even just poorer students, just dumber students or a lot of average students. There are something like 2000 people in my hs with 480 of them in my senior class, so the average can really be brought down by a mass amount of not so smart kids.

BC is more of a liberal arts school then a science school. Hence the reason for choosing BU over BC

98.5!? WTF is up with weird HS GPA's??

The GPA is weighted from all the honors and AP classes I've taken.

Wow, the way it SHOULD be.

No...unless you go to Phillips Academy, you are no better than a public school. Publics schools like Newton High School (in Newton, Ma) have an edge on private schools.

There's many good public schools that dominate many private schools. As was said before, a large public school with a vast AP program is going to do a lot more for you than a smaller private school that lacks that. If you're in the AP track (as I was in HS) you have your work cut out for you, competition is very stiff. There are several high schools around where I live that have class sizes in the 700-1000s. Every year they place many students in IVYs, big name tech schools, etc...
