So I go in for my meeting to get unsuspended for fall quarter. I say

"Look, I messed up spring quarter and failed a class, but I did take 2 classes in the summer and got A's in both of them."

She says

"Do you work?"

I say

"Yeah, 30 hours a week. No big deal, it's a stress-free job for the most part."

She says

"Well I'm going to reccommend you take only 6 credits. You can take a full 5 credit class and then a 1 credit weight-lifting class or something that you only have to show up to once a week. I mean, you're working 30 hours a week, so factor in another 5 hours for your class, and then 2 hours a night for homework. That's 45 hours a week! I know I wouldn't sign up for that"

I tell her

"Well, I'm pretty sure It's just me. I mean, all those hours I spent spring quarter partying and playing video games surely could have been spent to easily get A's in all of my classes."

She says

"Well lets just start with 6 credits for now. I'm going to lift the hold on your registration so you can register."

So, I came home and registered for a full-load (15 credits) and hopefully I won't be hearing from her. I couldn't believe the stuff she was saying. She sounded like a robot.

I'd say she did her job based on the facts. She has no idea that the partying/gaming is what really led to your failures. She's trying to help you succeed and you're completely ignoring the advice.

You got suspended, so she's treating you like someone who got suspended. I don't see the problem here. She can only recommend how many hours to take, so you can take whatever you feel comfortable with.

But were you ever suspended for academics. Some can handle it but the OP has not proven he can yet.

did you fail any classes?

4 separate instances.

Discrete Math once, Assembler once (along with everybody else, it has a 20% passing rate here) and CompSci3 twice. In CompSci3, the first time I was completely lost in the curriculum and the second time, they had just transitioned the course from C++ 3 to Java 3, so I was even more lost. I got an A the last time around.

I made up for my stumblings by taking both summers and 21 credits the last semester and 28 credits the semester before it. I also CLEP'ed Calculus.

My GPA never got anywhere near the academic suspension levels however... You have to REALLY fvck up to do that....

Did you guys not read the whole 45 hours a week thing? It's ridiculous. No class gives that much homework. I've proven I can take more than 6 credits at a time without any problem. Like I said, it has nothing to do with my job, just me not being motivated to do the homework. But she continues to use my job as an excuse to downsize my credits.

Why do you always say 2 years and 9 months? That's the same as 3 school years.

And clearly the OP couldn't handle it before. Hopefully he has the restraint to get good grades this time.

Because "three years" can mean august through december. I didn't take a 4th fall semester and I didn't take a third summer. I did it in 30 months I think.

What? The norm is 1.5-2 hours of homework for every hour you spend in class. So 10 hours of homework a week for a 5 hour class sounds about right.

You've also proven that you can't handle it. She was advising you based on prior results. How does she know that motivation won't become a factor again? If you'd listen there is some good advice.

It's not as if she has never seen someone do this before. I think she probably has a pretty good feel for how students will do. It' be in your best interest to do it. If you can handle this, then start loading credits back up.

BlancoNino, I truely hope you don't let your ego get the better of you. You failed in the past, you might fail again. Sure, you can do better, but your track record says otherwise.

Do you really need 15 credits this semester? Do you really need to work 30 hours/week? Honestly, do you need either of those? Are you willing to give up most of your social life? If you answer yes to all of those, then go ahead and work 30 hours and take 15 hours of class. But, remember, you are probabally failing at life if you do so. Your focus will be wrong. Life isn't about rushing college or giving up your social life so you can work during college.

If looking out for your overall well-being makes your counselor stupid, then she is stupid. But at least you have someone looking out for you. Don't take it for granted. Instead, learn to cherish the people in life that look out for you.

I failed a class once, never ended up on suspension or anything but failing a single class shouldn't keep you from registering for classes the next term, that's just stupid.

Don't listen to these morons, take a full class load, you'll be fine.

I take 17-20 credits a term, work 40-45 hours, and I'm the president of the volleyball team...and I still have a social life! Its not that big a deal. Maybe his school has some asinine policy of suspending you if you fail a class, that's just stupid.

you are right. one class does not put you on probation. usually a GBA under 2.o does..

And you failed a class. And no matter how you cut it, you have 40-45 hours less social life than people who aren't working full time.

Do you notice a pattern that the 3 people in this thread who said it is no big deal also failed classes?
