well, you could try RIT like others have mentioned. there are several good engineering fields you can take an option to study in.

i'm a 4th year at RIT but i'm a sophomore in industrial design because i changed my major.

RIT is located in the suburbs but take my note, don't live in downtown.

QFT. Rochester is a sh!t hole. I've only been into the city three times since I've been here and that was only to go to Dinosaur BBQ... which has really good fried green tomatoes. If you need to do any shopping though we are surrounded by miles of strip malls!

I don't know the details, most of them went there when I was a freshman, and I heard about it from the guidance councilors and a couple parents

Academics as in what? The kids not doing the work because they are screwing around? Or the teachers? Or what? I know that my Uncle's Brother graduated from there as a Chemical Engineer and said the school was great. Also, one of my teachers now graduated from there with an EE degree. I've heard good stories from both.

Northeastern, cause it's in Boston... and they require co-ops.
NU is alright. I go ther and i am about to graduate. If it was not for the coop, the school would be useless. I think WPI is a better choice.

university of maryland, college park is a good school, but public universities like to charge out of state students a $hitload of money (DAMN YOU UIUC!)

I looked briefly at Clarkson
I decided against it because a few kids from my school have gone there and had terrible times

These were good students too

one did ok and was one of their best cross country skiers though... (so says her mom)

I ruled out UMASS because of the party atmosphere
I don't mind a little, but zooMASS has too much for me

Manhattan, I don't want to live in the city, not for me. I need forests

I never really looked into Merrimack
NatePo, should I bother?

What was the "terrible times" they went through?
If you want to be in the forests, you can't go wrong with Clarkson.. lol. UMass I just visited, didn't really look deeply into it. As far as Manhattan, it was a nice and small school. I liked it myself, but I don't mind the city. As far as Merrimack, I scheduled a tour and my tour guide sucked ass. She didn't eve bring us inside anywhere except for the main cafeteria building -- and the cafeteria was closed at the time. I saw their deli-type thing and the gym, but that's it. The campus was really flat, which is a plus.. but it didn't look nice at all. It wasn't well groomed is what you could say, and personally I like the campus more if they take care of them.

Umass Lowell is a gem for engineering. No one cares to go there b/c it's in Lowell, but the egineering program itself is very good.

You obviously haven't been to RPI, or Troy in general. Then again, maybe you have and you have rightfully deemed it worse that "sh1t hole" status.

Back in high school I immediately dismissed RIT, RPI, WPI due to them being in "sh1t holes". It really depends if you care about the surroundings of the university.

BTW, I graduated from Northeastern Univeristy, and I had a good time. You only go to this school if you are going to take full advantage of the CO-OP program. The prices have increased quite a bit over the past few years. Right now, I'm in the middle of my Master's Degree at NU.
