Its all a matter of opinion, so I'm not going to tell you that my opinion is better than anyone else's, even though I think it is (that's why its an opinion). If you have a fancy for the old style Marine combat knives, which are more akin to a machete than a knife, then hey, different strokes for different folks. I admit, I have a Marine style KABAR fighting knife, too, but it's more at home amongst my camping gear than anything else.
I completely agree with the camp-knife comment. But that's why the Ka-bar is considered a more all around useful knife than something like my trusty old Fairbairn-Sykes. I learned with the FS and it fits my fighting style, so it's the knife I prefered to carry. The problem is finding a good one these days.
The FS had so many bad production runs. Probably the worst were the ones manufactured in the U.S. for the Marines. They had the wrong balance, handle design, and poor temper. They would slip in the hand and break in use because of this, and so it has a bad rep. But if you get a good English manufacture with either a knurled grip or a ring and bead, then you have a fighting knife worth carrying.
