Me and my roommate have been having a few issues with are network latly (mainly are addiction to Bit Torrent which doesn't play well with multiple computers on one IP address)
I found out are ISP allows multiple IP addy's (upto 5), so I pulled my old 10mb switch out and added it to our network to test it worked great but as I expected thier wasn't a secure way to enable file and printer sharing between my computer, my xbox, and his computer. so I devised the following layout for the network.
I pull the internet straight off the switch. the I hooked the router to the swtich and hooked it to my xbox, my roommates computer, my vonage box, and to allow me to get file acess to the xbox and my roomates system I added a nic to my system and also attached it to the router.
after fiddling with IPs (took me a second to figure out that I had to manually input an IP addy for the router nic on my system so it didn't pull the internet from thier. seems to be working great but I thought this was a pretty odd network setup and thought I would post here to see if anyone has any comments on the setup
below is a pic of the network layout to help understand what i'm saying
