Compaq Proliant 3000

Anyone have any experiance with Proliant 3000s?
I just bought a 3000 6/300, waitting on it to be delivered.

I noticed in the spec sheets, that it supports up to 512mb RAM, however, the 3000 6/333 supports up to 3GB of RAM. Anyone know why the diffrence? They use the same system board, as far as I can tell. They type of memory also (168pin ECC EDO DIMMS). Is the system memory board diffrent?

Any thoughts yall can share?

Not sure of the reasoning kinda odd though.. same design different chipset ?

As far as I can tell they use the same chipset.

Thanks to hdj and zenusic5 over at2cpu I now have the answer.

Early PII processors, with CPUIDs 0650h and below, can only cache 512mb of RAM. Thus generally negating most of the benifit of having ram excedding 512mb.

so if you just replace the CPUs you can use up to 3 GB ?

It's the best place I've ever found to get parts for older compaq servers. They pretty much have everything.

We're using PII 400 based 3000's here with 512-2048 ram depending on which one. I've also got one of these baby's at home gathering dust in the closet. I'll get it running someday but I need some more drive space on it.
