just got back from microcenter near my house, for the sole purpose of checkig out x1000. My impression, get it!

the casing is made of aluminum, and it feels pretty sturdy. The lapotp weights about 6.5 pounds, and last about 4-5 hrs. The design is actually pretty good, very clean and simple.

Thanks for the tip. I'll probably swing by Fry's to feel it up myself tomorrow.

Has anyone found any good reviews for the x1000 ? It's such a nice package at a reasonable price, it feels like there has to be a catch somewhere...

it is aluminum , I played with it for about 2 hrs. Although, I think the new 17' powerbook actually use space-age material . i learned it from the apple powerbook commerical

Sitting on the same screen at Microcenter too long you guess? It'd be strange if it had this anymore then a typical LCD...

Do you find this laptop bulky? I wonder if someone who HAS USED an IBM T40 would comment on the X1000. It seems that at 1.5" thick (as reported by Cnet) and 6.5lbs, it would seem to be bulky. The Apple 17" powerbook is 6.5lbs and the 15" powerbook is ~5lbs. Both are wide screens. I have the T40 ande I think anything bigger or heavier just would not be "portable" by my standards. It also seems that the T40 14.1 screen looks bigger than it is.

the laptop is actually about 1.3" thick on average , I think cnet measured the thickest part of the laptop (on the tail back ). 6.5 is decent, I mean for the price of x1000, it is not all dat bad. IBM T 40 is by far the best mobile Unit on the market today, surpassing even apple's powerbook IMHO. The 17" PB is lighter b/c it uses space age material and probably have alot of priporitery internal components whcih reduces the weight.

is radeon 7500 sufficient for 2D, playing DVD's and DivX's with the 1280x800 screen?
I don't play games or do serious graphics stuff. Can someone comment. Thanks.
Also, I am planning to get some memory myself. Does it void the warranty if I put it in? I never owned a laptop, so this is kind of new.

I just checked out one at MicroCenter as well and I was very impressed. They had the 1280x800 screen and it looked very nice, now I'm wondering what the step up looks like As has been said the keyboard is *very* nice and while it is a bit wider then some laptops it doesn't seem as deep (hence the widescreen).

Build quality seems good too, aluminum shell seems pretty sturdy.

did u play around with the battery installed on the laptop or w.o it?

I just hate it when they remove the battery from the display modle, it belies the true weight of the laptop

They had the thing on this weird ass podium that I prompty removed it from, and no, they had removed the battery unfortunately. I'm used to my Dad's heavy-ass series of Dell PC replacements though so this one is nearly 2.5-3 pounds less then his monstrosities.

Funny thing was after I looked at it, this little kid with a green sucker came along and started kid-handling it, almost knocked it off the podium and put his sucker on it.

Was kinda funny. His dad was checking out laptops near by.

Just checked it out at Fry's. I like it.
Could someone answer my question about the 32 mb radeon 7500? Is that one sufficient for playing dvd's, divx's on that screen?
I have a desktop at home for games, so this will be mostly for presentations, 2D, and videos.

I have an original 32MB AIW Radeon with a 900MHz Celeron for my desktop PC (with a CRT) and it has no issues whatsoever with DVDs. So I'm guessing with a CPU 2-3x as fast as well as a better Radeon (even if it is mobile), it shouldn't have a problem.

Yeah, I just ordered it two days ago as my first laptop. $1709 - Student discount ($90) - $100 mail in rebate - 10% coupon - $50 rebate for floppy drive = $1388 . I got the WSXGA+ screen (1680 x 1050), 9200 32mb Radeon, 128 mb of RAM (ordering more off Crucial) and the 3-year Damage Protection Warranty. It's a steal.

I just hope it's reliable. From the new reliability surveys released today, I'm kind of nervous. Good thing I purchased the warranty.

I used compaq desktops for 5 years already and the current breed are just damn reliable.. their tech support and hardware warranty are also top notch..i mean how many companies will send u a replacement HD in less than 2 days via Fedex or purolator if urs fail?

i don't know what is up with PCmag..since i started reading their magazine back in 1999, dell alwaz had the best rating and compaq/hp alwaz had the crappiest rating? (notice lots of dell AD on PCworld??) I just do not understand..something is just not right there. I mean Compaq EVOs are some of the best biz notebooks around and have very strong sales and standing in the market. Those rating just do not translate into the excellent sales figure compaq has. And yeah, some of the customers interviewed or who appeared on Pcworld are complete computer dumasses or old dying pple who haven even figured out how to setup a LAN I alwaz stick with compaq for their performance, price and exterior design. I almost bought a T40 but now i am waiting for this X1000 or the NX7000 model. IBM and DELL laptops are just plain UGLY, PERIOD. NO QUESTIONS ASKED. even their latest model.

There is a student discount? Didn't know that.
Anyways. I looked at the 1280x800 screen at fry's, and I was fine with it. I don't think I would run it at 1680x1050 on a 15 inch screen, and if I am going to run around 1280x800 anyways, I would rather do it natively than stretched. I was thinking about the 32mb radeon, but then I figured as long as it does 2D and plays divx's and DVD's, I am fine with it, since I have 2 desktops for games. I guess if it was my sole computer I would get more options, but for a secondary one, its fine. Anyone know if the JBL speakers are any good? The ones at fry's weren't working.
