computer does not power down

When I shut windows down, Windows closes out, the monitor goes into standby but the tower doesn't power off. All the fans and lights are still on. Holding down the power button on the front of the tower will not power it down either, I have to flip the switch on the back of the power supply to actually power off the machine.

When I turn the computer on, I flip the switch on the power supply and all the fans start...but Windows doesn't start to load till I press the power button on the front of the computer. All the parts are new and have worked with no problems for over 6 months. This started about 2 weeks ago. I have gone thru the bios and Windows power setting to make sure it is set to power off when shut down.

Any ideas??

Thanks

First thing to consider is the possibility of programs that are running in the back ground preventing the computer from shutting down. Does the computer shutdown from safemode? This is an easy way to test the software end of it. If it does, edit msconfig to find the start up program that is running in the background.
Second thing I would try would be to reset you motherboard bios to defaults. Be sure however to make note of any customer bios settings relating to raid controllers or other boot critical items. Many bios' allow you to back up bios profiles before you make any changes. After you reset the bios, if you do happen to make changes, be sure to take note of what you changed.
Third thing I would check is to update chipset drivers, including anything dealing with acpi and power management.
Fourth I would update the bios of the motherboard. Be careful in doing so however as it is possible to kill a motherboard doing so. Find a good guide, or refer to your motherboards manual for flashing procedures.

I tried all your suggestions mujizac but nothing seemed to help. I am going to look into RMAing my Abit MB and see if that fixes it

my program at work needs to be manually closed before i can shut down that computer. If not it just sits there as if i did nothing.
