Computer Doesn't Start

i built a new computer with XFX 680i mobo, q6600 processor, and a thermaltake 750W PSU.

First time i power it up, it starts the fans then shuts down.

Second time i power it up, it short circuits and smokes up the room.

Third time and on is the same thing.

I disconnected everything but the mobo and that works fine. fans power up and it runs smoothly.

I connected the video card and its good.

Everything is good until i connect the cpu power.

Then i keep getting the same startup and shutdown.

is the problem my cpu or the motherboard or the PSU? the part that got fried was a little circuit under the top heatsink. there could be something wrong with that rail on the PSU...

any suggestions are greatly appreciated i'm depserate.

Sorry to say but, after "it short circuits and smokes up the room," you've just fried your MB and probably CPU and ram as well. You're going to have to check all your components in a working machine before incorporating them into your new build.

everything seems fine, the processor is not burned and does not show any sign of damage and neither does the RAM. it was instantaneous so i pulled the plug ASAP. then only thing that seemed to get burned was the nortbridge. i think it was a defective mobo because it instantly just started smoking at the northbridge. no other part shows any sort of damage.

Can you explain why you powered it up repeatedly after it short circuited?

Answer this: "I disconnected everything but the mobo and that works fine. fans power up and it runs smoothly." Are you getting POST errors with no CPU, RAM, or VGA installed?

i was trying to find the culprit. it would start and run fine without the cpu etc. plugged in after the short circuit. but once i plugged the cpu back in, it would start then shut off like the first time i tried to power it on. the bios doesn't show up when it does run though. i don't even get a display signal. the video card fan runs and everything it's installed correctly but no luck.

i dont even understand why it shorted if it just shuts itself off anyways. i have to go with defective mobo.

If you're not getting POST errors with a missing CPU, then it is probably the mobo. Missing CPU, RAM, or VGA will return POST errors.
