Try taking the GPU out of the equation and connect your monitor to the onboard video to see if there's any difference. If it's the same; before you consider reinstalling, run chkdsk from an elevated command prompt with these switches:

chkdsk C: /x /v /r /b

Malwarebytes found:

Files Detected: 1
C:\Users\Pascal\Downloads\XBCDv107.exe (Trojan.FakeAlert.NSIS) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
.

Opps, I missed this part. This may be the final nail in the coffin. Those can wreak all kinds of havoc on Windows and leave it unrepairable. I would try spybot and super anti-spyware. If those don’t find anything you may be forced to format and reload.

Dumb question on my part, but is he running on all 4 cores at the moment? I'm used to seeing individual CPU Usage History blocks for each of my processors/threads.

Reinstalled windows, and indeed now I see 4 cpu cores in the Task manager. Will report back on if it fixed the issue or not, need to install a bunch of programs to really test it.

Just saw this thread, and it looked like some Malware that would have been difficult/ impossible to remove. I am glad you were able to do the reinstall. I did see a bit of excess in the amount of cleaning/security software that you may also find is slowing down your system. Safe browsing habits are far more effective, and don't slow down your computer.

Update: it got laggy again shortly after installing my programs and using a few of them. All I have installed besides the basic drivers/Chrome is Comodo Firewall and Malwarebytes. The only other programs I have installed are poker sites and Foobar2000.

I am getting the same kind of laggy window movement that makes it seem like I am almost out of memory but I have 4gb free RAM and 10-16% cpu usage.

At this point I'm out of ideas unless there's something faulty in my hardware, but when I freshly installed everything seemed fine but obviously I wasn't using much of anything at this point. If it does this now under a fresh Windows install and everything we have done, what is left to test out?

Remove Comodo and see if it gets better.

If win 7 works without lag on my 1.86ghz core duo laptop with 2GB of RAM, it should do on yours too. Smells like video problem to me.

I'm not convinced malware has been completely ruled out of the equation. Sounds like something is eating at your GPU resources (as well as your CPU/memory), causing the poor refresh quality. Your issue could very well be hardware/driver related, but ruling out malware is absolutely critical at this point.

What happens when you're running in Safe mode (with networking)?

At this point, I'd take these steps:
  1. Reboot into Safe mode with networking. Take note if the problem is persistent or not while in safe mode.
  2. Run RKill. Be careful of false positives. (More information on RKill here.)
  3. I'd recommend also scanning with MBAR for rootkit checks.
  4. Run your traditional protection software after making certain its database is updated for additional insurance.
  5. Reboot and run Windows normally and if the issue persists look toward hardware/driver issues.
Additionally, I recommend enabling image pathname for task manager (View>Select Columns). This can help point out some abhorrent programs.

Best of luck!

Hey,

thanks again for all of the help I have gotten, it's much appreciated! I uninstalled COMODO and on this reboot so far so good. It's funky because when I did this yesterday it still lagged. I will see how it goes today before saying the issue is fixed, it's possible it will come back.
