Computer locking up in quake3

i have an a7v133, running win2k sp2, installed latest via4in1's, amd agp patch, pci latency patch, tried many different drivers for my vid card, tried the latest 2 bios updates
i'm sure my psu is fine. it's a powerman 300w
my cooling is adequate.

also, both of my harddisks are in raid0, using the onboard promise controller (which i have the latest drivers for)
before i installed raid my system was rock solid.

however, whenever i start playing quake3, after a minute or 2 my system will freeze out of nowhere. what do you think is causing this? i have an sblive....but even when i remove it completely, the lockups still occur (same with all other pci cards).

It seems that if everything else was fine, but then you added RAID, then maybe that is the problem. Can you try without RAID?

not needed if you've got sp2 installed.
suggest you try using x1 AGP transfers by installing the via driver in normal mode instead of turbo!

I hate to say, but it's the motherboard or the video card overheating. I went through this for months suspecting it was the VIA chipset or the SB Live, etc. I got the same overheating with 3 different Geforces.. so I really think it's the motherboard (cpu).

Just heat. Open up your case and blow a fan on the motherboard. It'll play just fine.

bacillus, i'll try that, but where do u select normal mode over turbo? i dont' see it anywhere. in the 4in1 4.37 setup, i have Normally Setup or Quickly Setup. i've always been selecting normally setup...

zara, i don't think my mobo is overheating...because i do have 2 50cfm exhausts (1 backside, 1 blowhole) and 1 intake. my mobo temps are below 30c

i wish i could try this without raid, but then i'd lose my gigs and gigs of music

try running the game with a different video card (if you can beg borrow or steal another one)

Most problems fitting your description can be traced to a video card overheating.

neil, it's just that my vid card hasn't overheated before...
i have lots of airflow in my case, and the heatsink on the vid card is only slightly warm

What motherboard and video card do you have?

If you have an AMD northbridge you should be installing AMD's AGP GART driver not VIA's.

Just looked under your Profile Quad you`ve the ATi Radeon right and you said ASUS A7V133 which is a VIA KT133a board,anyway disable all video shadowing in BIOS and disable system bios cacheable,disable fastwrites also if listed in bios.Make sure PCI slot 1 is empty if possible,if this does not work could be problem with your RAID setup.
