I like Maximum PC and PC Gamer, but I'll read anything with "PC" on the front cover

A while back at Chapters, I picked up a UK mag called "PC Format". It was probably one of the most kickass mags I have seen in a while.

The only drawback for me personally is I can no longer justify buying a PC mag when a) there is so much info available online in a more dynamic format and b) I can download all the demos on the given CD, so it doesn't justify the higher price for the mag.

But... everyone needs "reading material" for those down times during the day. ie. on the crapper. lol

I would go with Maximum PC. I'm like meltdown, though. The information in the magazines are often outdated due to the publication process. The Internet will bring you most of that news more quickly.

I used to religiously read CGW (Computer Gaming World) ever since my days with the C64. I still think it has the best reviews in that they haven't been afraid to criticize the big name developers. They were the only ones to call UO out for what it was upon its release (i.e. coaster-- and as one of thousands that ran out and bought it on its release I concur wholeheartedly). I digress. I haven't bought a copy in over a year mainly because of their brilliant idea of packaging an often defective demo CD with a lot of junk I could download (but likely wouldn't), which evidently justifies a near $10 US pricetag. That's ridiculous.

Sorry for the brief rant.

I would also suggest Maximum PC also if you're looking to get a subscription.
PC World and PC Magazine for me, it is more toward to consumers side, but Max* PC is more concentrating on power user.

There are 3 year subscriptions to Maximum PC going for ~$10 on eBay right now. I bought one a couple months back when my previous sub ran out.

pcgamer is the only one geared strictly towards pc gaming that I can stand.

Unfortunately, according to their reviews, almost every game that comes out should be bought.

CPU has some good editorials.
Max PC is bleh
Wired can be interesting from time to time.
EGM is respectable because of clever writing fromo time to time.
eWeek once in a while has something interesting.

Really, you're kind of just going for the editorials and features. I started to loathe Max PC after a while because the writing was boring and every damn issue seemed to be the same "watch us build the PC of the year with parts you can buy online" type deal.
Linux journal/mag are interesting if that's your thing.
