Hi.

I think I have a heat issue with my machine. The CPU is within Intel's spec, but barely.

My question is this. How hard is it to remove the cpu heatsink/ fan mount from a motherboard? On this board it uses the 4stands that come stock with a P4 3.2 CPU. Do I need to take the motherboard out, or can I just remove the mount while the motherboard is still installed in the case?

In the past, using clips it wasn't too bad. But if I have to disconnect everything to get to the mount, I'll save it for a day when I have more free time....

You should be able to take the heatsink off without removing the motherboard. I use a flat head screwdriver. But be careful not to hit your motherboard while removing the heatsink.

Thank you for the quick reply.

However, my concern is taking off the mount, not the heatsink. The heatsink is a pain in the ass, but it does come off with a screwdriver. The mount on the other hand, I am not so sure about....

By mount, I mean the 4 arms sticking up from the motherboard....

Have you considered this being a PSU issue? The PC requires unplugging the power cord to work. This might mean that some short is occuring on the +12/+5 volt rails kicking the PSUs safety features into action.

Have you tried leaving your case open and using a fan to blow air into it to see if the problem occurs again and for verifying that the problem is with the CPU overheating?

I have opened up the case and left the side panel off. So far, I have not gotten any shutdowns. However, it has been only a couple of days.

I thought it might be the power supply as well. and I am working on switching out the powersupply to see if that helps.

I'll try and pick one up tonight and see if that and the open case door solves the problem.
