Altec Lansing ACS48 - satellite speaker, fuzz at most levels. the speaker PN is A2156.

How hard is it to repair something like this? There's no visible tear or mark in the cone. That's the only visible spot I can inspect.

What about replacement? Altec doesn't replace anything, they're actually quite useless.

Here's all I have to really use, and I'm not positive I know all of what's going on in the thread.

The speaker they suggest using, and all the requisite 3" or so speakers I can find are 8 ohm. The original speaker is 4 ohm, and I don't know enough to say I know if that will work. Will it?

One of my main questions - if I'm replacing one, should I replace both? I know I can probably buy a nice, similar system for not much nowadays, but if I can get it done with a $5 speaker at Radio Shack I'm damn sure going to try.

All things equal, the 8 ohm speaker will require twice the power as the 4 ohm.

You can use it, but it will be half as loud.

I have worked on about a half-dozen sets of these with the same problem and
on 5 of them it was caused by bad solder joints on the DIN Speaker Connector
on the Sub-Woofer.

The other was the VOLUME CONTROL.

If you are sure it is indeed the speaker, you would need to find a replacement
with the same DEPTH (and voice coil throw) or quality of the sound will be just
as bad as it is now.

I seriously doubt you would be happy with the $5 Radio Shaft replacement.

yeah, afraid of that. The Tang Band speakers I looked at, all 8 ohm. The crappy Radio Shack speakers that weren't even in stock (reason I went to RS - I've got a $20 credit there I need to use) are all 8 ohm. So I've gotta do a ton more research.

It's gotta be the speaker, because I can pan left 100% and I get no problem. It affects nothing other than the right speaker.
