computer turns on by itself

for some reason when i turn off my system, it will turn back on, sometimes instantly sometimes after a few seconds but never longer then a minute. i have tried to find wake on lan but couldn't find it in the bios. this started happening after i reinstalled windows. this happened before but i forgot how i solved it, i thiink it went away by itself. what shoulld i do

try reseting the BIOS. you might have Automatic power on after power loss on or something. look in the power section.

First thing to do is unplug your network cable before you shut down, so you can know for sure if wake-on-LAN is the problem.

Check Device Manager properties for your network adapter and see if there is a "wake on" setting in there.

WakeOn Lan can sometimes be enabled through the card itself. Go into Device manager and check the advanced settings for your card.

Also, check wake on keyboard/mouse is not enabled. If you're using an optical mouse on a less-then perfect surface, the slightest movement can sometimes wake them

Wake on Lan is even possible with one of those plugs on the motherboard, very similar to those plugs that help you select whether you drive is Primary, Slave, or Auto Detect.
Or it can be something similar in which you plug in something from near the PCI connector to your motherboard, if your network connection is not built in (a la many wireless network cards)

Also, with the Wake on Keyboard/mouse it's possible that the keyboard responds only to cetain keys. I know I had my desktop set up so that I could just tap the spacebar and it would start the computer. I definitely remember doing this in the BIOS of the computer.

when i turn off my computer i don't even touch the keyboard and mouse anymore because it turns on about 20 seconds later. but i will try to turn it off with the network cable unplugged. by the way for some reason this problem only happens in the night when i turn it off.

They are called jumpers.





OP, are you sure it is shutting down all the way and not doing some sort of restart?

I bet it won't restart if you pull the power after you shut it down

ya i am sure that i am pressing shut down. when it reboots, its usually like 20 seconds before it restarts again, so its not instant
