computer won't boot

I am building a new computer for myself and I tried running a gigabyte ga-7dx mobo, athlon XP 1800+ , 256 MB pc2100 ddr ram, 20 gig 7200 rpm hdd, and a geforce 2 T 64MB ddr video card with a 300 watt power source but it wouldn't boot. Its weird, all the fans spin and the hdd starts spinning but nothing comes on the screen, i tried using a pci video card as well. Also, I have 2 places where i can connect the case fan on the mobo, the power fan and the system fan, i used to have it connected to the system fan outlet but it stopped working after i switched power sources because the system didn't boot then either. I really hope its not my Mobo or cpu because i can't get warrenty on them, won them at one of the XP tour stops.

Check everything to make sure it's seated properly.. most important.. ram and vid card..

clear the CMOS maybe?

If you've got another vid card, cpu or maybe other ram to try on that board do that..

Take out the Geforce and put in some cheapy card-(anything except a geforce) for now, even a PCI video card if you have one. Then see if it boots...


Geforce cards are known for being power hungry...and it seems some Motherboards have trouble providing enough power at boot up. One of my KK266-r boards is like this, boot-up is 50/50, but once its going the system is great.


NOTE: when my board fails to boot, it also does not beep, only the fans spin up.

Unplug all of your power cables inside the case. Once you plug everything back in try again, this worked for me before.

i've tried using a pci graphics card before but still didn't work I'm beginning to think that my Mobo is just dead.

Can you get into the BIOS, or won't it even POST? Check your jumpers to make sure your voltages and speeds are in the default position, and that the jumpers are all there. Maybe one fell out. Are your IDE drives properly set as master/slave? As suggested, check your connections and how the ram and CPU are seated.

Try removing all drives (hd, floppy, cd) to see if they are draining too much power.

My initial guess is a "dead CPU".. Try it in another PC and you'll get a quick answer..

Minimum to get at least the beep codes... Motherboard/CPU/Power Supply.

This happened to me this weekend. It was a CPU that was DOA. If you have another CPU, try that one, if you still don't get a beep, it's probably your motherboard. Either way, you should be able to RMA it.

UPDATE: I read some other threads and took out all the motherboard support screws that were unneccessary and tested my graphics card on my friends computer. The graphics card worked on my friends computer and the computer still did not boot with or without the graphics card. I only had the motherboard, 300 watt power source, cpu and ram installed. next to be tested is the ram, then the cpu. I really hate going through and testing everything
