As the tilte states, my computer won't power down. System specs:
AMD X2 4400+ @ 9x285MHz
2x512 Ballistix Tracers DDR500 @ 233MHz 2.5, 3, 3, 8
DFI NF4 DAGF
2x120Gb Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 SATA120Gb in RAID0
ATI Radeon x800XL
Windows XP Pro (up-to-date via Windows auto-update)
Lite-On DVDROM IDE
Samsung CDRW IDE
Antec NeoPower HE 500w.

I had one of the Maxtors running for several months as a solo drive. About 1/20 times, it would do this when selecting 'Shut Down' from Windows, but then all I had to do was hit the power button and all would turn off. Now, it won't power down at all, even when selectiing to 'Restart'. 'Restart' never would hang before. Now, I have to hold the power button down for several seconds before the unit will shut off. When I do this, upon next startup, Windows shows no sighn of improper shut down. No "Windows was not properly shut down" messages or the like.

To be more specific, it's hanging at the "Windows is shutting down" screen, not just keeping fans and lights on.

I am having no other problems at all whatsoever.

I have checked the event viewer, (before and now), but no errors are being reported.
I have checked the BIOS version, and the only update for BIOS addresses an issue I am not having.
I have toggled the S1/S3 ACPI setting in BIOS with no change.
I have tried Safe Mode with no change. It will not even power down from Safe Mode.
I have reset CMOS and loaded BIOS defaults, (Overclock off), with no change. It still won't power down.
Temps are completely normal.
PSU is all good.
Neither drive is failing, checked with Maxtor's PowerMax tool.

I have had everything in this computer changed since the first time the solo drive did this except the motherboard.

Please, PLEASE, help me figure this out!

EDIT: Oh, I have a Seagate 120Gb SATA that I use as my backup HDD and when using it, (the data is identical, the source of the data on the array from cloning), the system operates completely fine.

I had that problem alot with Windows ME, which I never did figure out why. This is the first I've heard of it with XP.

The only thing I can think of to try at the moment is with a reg. edit, because it might be something isn't ending completely. I don't know if that's the case or not but if you feel like it you could change:

There is an entry that tells windows how long to wait if something isn't ending properly but if it doesn't end it has the box that you can end it now anyway.

There is another entry is if something is still not ended after the time allowed windows will end it on it's on without you telling it to do it.

I'm at work and can't remember off the top of my head where in the reg these values are but I'll try to post back with the locations if you feel like trying it.

Try shutting down all the programs with the Task Manager before shutting down Windows. At least this might tell you if the problem is with a program hanging up.

Wow. Thanks for all the replies!

I have fixed it, though. Turns out, there had to have been some problem with the RAID driver.

I dl'd the newset driver from nVida via DFi's site,(actually tried two before I got this one to work, one caused MAJOR problems...lol). Updated the RAID driver and all is good now, but the strangest thing happend during the install......

The drivers installed into sys32-watnot and went fine, then at the end of the install, Windows reports an error: "The source of the installation is unaccessable"

IDK what that means, but it's working properly now.

Thanks again!
