hey, so i decided to HIBERNATE my computer for the first time with XP two nights ago, and when I tried to turn the damn thing on, nothing happened. No LED light, no fan, nothing. (yes i checked the power source, power cables, etc). When it's plugged in my computer makes this weird hissing noise (really quiet), but I know at least power is getting to it. I don't know what to do other than take this to a repair shop and get ripped off. help help help.

Computer info: Emachines 400mhz celeron (4 yrs old), 192 ram, win xp. was running beautifully til then. i guess hibernate and emachines don't make a good combo.

thanks to anyone who replies

There are some BIOS options that you have to set to get Hibernate to work properly. I know because I had this same problem. I don't know anything about what BIOS you may have so I can't help. Sorry!

Your BIOS may be using an older power management scheme called APM (Advanced Power Management). Go into your WinXP Power Options (start => settings => control panel => Power Options) and see if there's an APM tab. If you dont see it, then you're not using APM, you're using ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface, which is the standard nowadays). If you do see it, check the box to allow WinXP to use APM.

I dont know if this has to do with your hibernation isssue but i was having a problem where my PC wasn't completely shutting down and i discovered this was the cause.

Unplug the machine from the wall outlet and remove the CMOS battery(The little one on the mainboard that looks like a quarter) for a minute or so. Replace battery, plug back in and then see if it will start up again.

Have you ever replced the powersupply on this machine? It is extremely common for the PSU's on these things to die. I had to replace one in a friends Emachine that is the same as yours.
