Computer won't turn on

I'm trying to put together a system for someone and am having a real problem getting the blasted thing to turn on. It's an AM2 Sempron 2800+ system with an ECS C51GM-M motherboard and two 512MB sticks of DDR2 RAM. I've verified that the power supply turns on if you jump the two pins and I've verified multiple times that I've got the power switch plugged into the correct header on the motherboard. I've tried replacing the motherboard only to have the same issue with the new one.

You guys have any idea what the problem could be? Might it be a dead CPU? Any ideas you can throw my way would be greatly appreciated!

Did ya try booting outside the case? Could be grounding out somewhere!

though make sure everything is fully inserted and in the upright position


I've had things not fully inserted and got nothing when I flipped the switch.


unplug the power supply from the mobo and see if it will turn on (fans of course should be moving)

use just one stick of memory if that doesnt work.. use just the other.. etc

remove all devices.. except a stick of memory and the videocard if you dont have onboard (and o/c the PS) and see if you can get it to post.

if it does then add the hard drive..

test

if it still does add the dvd drive

test

etc etc etc

also make sure you're not causing a short or other wonky issue...

Yeah, I've tried the board outside the case and no dice. I'll try it with one stick of memory at a time and see how it goes.

OK, it won't turn on with even no RAM in the slots (from what I know of the process, it should at least turn on and give a beep code if there's no RAM installed)

There should be bios beep codes if the processor, ram or video card is dead. Make sure the speaker is plugged in, it'll be an immense help.

In order to get a beep code, it would have to turn on . Right now, nothing happens when I press the power button. (And yes, I've made sure that the switch on the PSU is flipped on )

Question: does anybody know what would happen if I put a jumper on the two pins that the power switch plugs into?

Dont put a jumper on the pins, just use something to touch them and them togather but not stay on, screwdriver???

Did you plug in the little power cord from the processor into the motherboard? I forgot to do that once for a friend's build and what you are describing is exactly what was happening to me. :roll:

You mean, did I plug the CPU fan into the CPU fan header? Yes.

when working on a pc becarefull about static and install stuff with the psu unpluged from wall that mobo it really like a 24 pin atx conecter and ya also must hook up the 4 pin 12 volt atx. also make sure ya memory is seated coretly .
