Just bought a x-fi xtrememusic sound card and was installing it into my computer. After inserting the card into the slot the computer wouldnt turn on. So I tried removing the sound card and found the computer still wouldnt boot. The only thing i did was vacuum my cpu heatsink+fan and the other compartments in the antec p180 case. When the psu is on, my mobo (A8N-sli premium) shows the green standby light as on. I've tried clearing the cmos and removing the round battery, still wouldnt turn on. Any idea what might be the problem?

My current setup is:

a8n-sli premium mobo
amd 64 3500+ venice cpu
antec p180 case
antec 480 neopower psu
evga 7800 gt video card
thermalright si-120 heatsink

This was my first comp that i built and its been running fine for the past year. Cpu was never overclocked and temps were running in the low 30's during load. Is there any possibility that its the mobo? I've also tried turning on the comp with just the ram and cpu plugged in on the motherboard, still wouldnt turn on.

Well as simple as it sounds, check to make sure your power supply is turned on. Could be you bumped into it or something, I've done it before and freaked out before I realized I was dumb.

The power is online, when i try to turn the comp on, because the motherboard green standby light is on when i flip the psu switch on. Definitely getting power. But when i do hit the power switch on my case, nothing happens, no fans turn on. Note my fans are connected directly to the 4 pin connectors of the psu.

Take out all the components and try powerig up outside the case; suspect you've got a short somewhere... maybe happened when you inserted the X-Fi into the slot.

make sure you didn't knock the power sw jumper out when you were digging around in there. also make sure there's no loose metal (screws) that could be shorting the board out.

I got everything out of the case and laid it on a antistatic bag on my desk. Hooked up the motheboard to the power supply with cpu and ram on it only. Still didnt turn on. I've even tried touching the 2 prongs of the power switch on the motherboard with a paper clip. And its not the psu because i tried hooking up a old computer with it and the old computer powers on. Also i've tried removing all the ram and just have the motherboard + cpu hooked up. Still didnt power up =( Nor did it power up when i had only 1 stick of ram on the motherboard.

So now i'm guessing its either cpu or motherboard failure. I dont have another extra motherboard/cpu laying around, so i cant test neither of those 2. Now i'm just all bummed out that a soundcard did this somehow...

i'm guessing motherboard. if it was the cpu, it would still power on and give some signs of life. the bios would just give you a bad cpu bios warning.

Go back to the motherboard manual and verify that all the jumpers are in place. Temporarily remove CPU fan an and try to boot it again.
