So, whites displaying their pride is racist, but Black Pride isn't? I see black kids wearing shirts that say "Black Pride" or "Black Power" but it's ok for them right? But if were to have a shirt on that said White Power I would be labeled a racist and a bigot.

well once white people are poor and/or a minority then I suppose it will be fine. Till that day I suggest to just enjoy your time as a naturally favored race and forget the tshirt.

A piece of education for all you brainwashed northerners (coming from one who has lived and gone to school in the north, and the south:
Not all southerners are racist, and many northerners are.
Southern pride != racism!!! (To all those who think that: please put down the kewlaid and come back to reality!)
And most who display the said flag are usually rebellious (try to not be PC), and/or are white trash/rednecks.

I can attest to the fact that the education in schools about the Civil War greatly differs depending on where you live. In the north you are taught that all southerners are rebels, racists, uneducated, and uncivilized. In the south you are taught that northerners are bigots, power hungry, and corrupt. So it's likely that your opinion coincides with where you grew up.

I learned more racist terms for blacks from a native Bostonian when I was in the Navy than I ever heard growing up in the south.

I was educated at a public school in the south, and I learned neither of those groups of ideals in association with southerners/northerners. Our lessons were actually surprisingly objective and non-judgmental, and our teachers did their best to provide as many differing viewpoints as possible. And again, remember, this was at a public school, so it's likely that it reflects--at least in part--the same lessons that were given at other public schools throughout the county/state.

As for the confederate flag, (almost) anyone flying it will say it stands for "southern pride." However, it's inextricably linked with certain events and a history that entail oppression, racism, hatred, and violence. As such, to some extent, it will always represent those negative ideals.

I've been a southerner since I was 5 years old, and I have never--nor would I ever--put the confederate flag on anything I own for these reasons.

Well hate to break your Utopian idealogy, but white people are poor, hence that White Trash, ala Racist, ala Trailer Trash are the majority of people living in mobile homes, which everyone thinks of as poor people homes.

Also, white people are the minority in lots of major cities.

I've lived in the South for almost all of my life. Based on the "quality" of people I've seen with Confederate flags on their homes/trucks/whatever, I'm going to go with racist.

True, but as a whole, as far as I know, Whites still--on average--enjoy a higher socioeconomic status than all other racial groups, save possibly Asians.

Of course, your post brings up a good point: there's ALWAYS more variability within groups than there likely ever will be between them.

I think it is somewhat of a combination of a few things. To the people who put it on the back of their pickup truck, it is an arrogant declaration that they are rednecks. This is especially true if you are in a state not in the south or you have no family or residential connection to the south. That can mean a majority of things and usually racism is one of them. There are southerns who really feel it is about glorifying their heritage. It should also be mentioned there is a good bit of those who believe part of that heritage is racism. k
That being said, it is there American right to do that. So more power to them.

It represents racism, slavery, power over the government, and generally smelly guys driving beat up pickups listening to country music.

Also: inbreeding.

I dont have a utopian ideology. I live in Minnesota, we have like 7% minorities and 93% white people. Yes, some white people are poor but nowhere near the ratios black people are and also overall we are not a minority not to mention even if some major cities have white people in a minority they are still more likely the majority than any other race i.e. 25% black, 35% asian, 45% white etc etc

Anyone who thinks the Confederate battle flag is a symbol of slavery and racism is just as ignorant as those who fly it for that reason.

What are you talking about? The origination of the flag's meaning may have been different but obviously the current beliefs about it on a mass scale are that it's a symbol of racism. Cultural icons as controversial as the Confederate flag are defined by what the mass believes them to mean. The swastika is a perfect example of this. Very rarely are you going to have Westerners identifying the swastika as a sign of good will. I mean, come on. Are you ignorant for associating the swastika with racism because the roots of the symbol aren't?

it was racism, continuation of slavery. sure the north did the right thing for the wrong reason but that doesn't make the souths idiocy something to be proud of.

you might as well pretend the swastika is just a symbol of german national pride.

A swastika is actually a symbol of good luck. It's also thought to have warded off evil or offer a protection.

Apparently you don't know the current beliefs on it if you think that it's a symbol of racism. Just because everyone you know thinks it's a symbol of racism doesn't mean that some don't. That's like saying some Indian priest living in the jungle can't use a swastika because "OMG its offensive to j00s!"

Where are you from, btw?

Why? You think most southerners are proud of slavery?

I love how everyone rags on the South as being largely racist, implying that the rest of the US is a bastion of enlightenment where every ethnic group and racial group live in complete harmony. Give me a fvcking break. You want to know the real reason the south gets the bad rap on the whole?

In the south, racism isn't hidden like it is in much of the US. Folks generally don't have the "luxury" (put in quotes for a reason) of living in a county or state that is 90% white, like the rest of the US. Racism can be, and is, equally has bad or worse in much of the the US, there just aren't the concentrations of black people around to be racist towards.

I'd have to agree, I grew up north of the mason dixon line and even though their isn't alot of blacks up north outside of the cities, most people were more racist because they just didn't have to interact with anyone besides white folk.

BTW I thought it'd be interesting to get y'alls view on the poll that was done on a georgia outdoor news forum which seem to be opposite of this one. Link

I don't see it flown nearly as much now as I used to growing up (lived my whole life just outside of Atlanta). For most people I think it really was largely about Southern Pride, but now out of respect for others it's pretty much just rednecks that fly it (and it's anybody's guess what they're thinking).

More and more I'm seeing the South Carolina state flag being flown everywhere. It seems to be the PC way of showing that you're proud to be from the South.

That would be like a football fanatic displaying the NFL logo instead of their team's logo. They might love football in general, but it's the team logo that tells you why.
