It represents the (non-existent) Confederate States of America. Now, what that symbolizes is a lot of things. I'd say it represents states believing that they have more power than the federal government, although most southerners put it up as a symbol of pride in their heritage. I'm not sure how many of them like to consider racism in that heritage.

It's a simple of southern pride, but the concept of southern pride is completely linked with racism. You can be proud of where you come from and not be racist, of course, but if you fly the confederate flag and talk about how the south is going to rise again, I will (and I think most of the country will) make the (probably correct) assumption that you are a racist.

I see it a lot at the Orange County Fair, usually along with Skin and Independent decals on raised F150 or Silverado trucks.

As others have said, it's nothing to be proud of. There is a history to it and it's borderline retarded to mask your latent racism by pretending it means just Southern pride.

I have heard from a few Southerners that some Southerners are still disgruntled at the Federal Government for the Civil War, that the Union unfairly forced its view upon the South. Is this true? Most people falsely believe that it is a flag of the Confederate States themselves. What it is in actuality is a combination of the Confederate Battle Flag and the Confederate Naval flag. It never represented the Confederate States as the main flag (although it was part of but not the full flag).
