Confusing set up

I'll try to describe in detail what I have and how I want it to work. I have a laptop and a desktop. I want to be able to use one keyboard and one mouse to control both computers. I have a 24in monitor. When the KVM switch is set to the laptop I have two screens to work with (the laptop screen and the 24in). When I switch to the desktop I would like the laptop screen to remain (which it does) and the 24in to switch over to the desktop machine. It does not. The keyboard and mouse do but the monitor stays. The laptop has a vga connector and a dvi connector and the desktop has a video card with the same. The kvm switch is connected to both machines via their vga connectors and the laptop is connected to the 24in with the dvi connector. Can someone tell me where I went wrong or what I can do to get this working the way I want?

If the montiro is connected to the KVM right then it should be shifting over. Some KVMs have additional features where differnt items can be left where they are instead of shifting when the right key combo is pressed on the KB. So check you manuel for that sort of feature. Otherwise you may have a bad KVM.
