Frank Farley, one of my professors at UW-Madison, has theorized that the reason America is so violent is that the people who founded it and populated it are the descendents of people with thrill-seeking personalities. Obviously the decision to fight the American Revolution, and the decision of subsequent immigrants to come to the US, required them to be more thrill-seeking and less risk-averse than many other people. This in turn (under the theory) makes us more aggressive and thus violent as a people. Certainly the Swiss, as a whole, would generally be the direct opposite.

I have no doubt that as we learn more about genetics and the human mind that we'll find there's something to this. It probably goes beyond culture, and into DNA.

They need to hire armed security at schools and have all entries be double door systems. Where the first door opens to a foyer type area with a metal detector and x-ray machine and two armed guards.

Once the individual passes muster, the second door opens (only after the first door has been closed)

Also around the schools build 18 feet high fences with concertina wire and a second set right behind it with cameras and a watch tower with an armed rifleman to shoot down any hostile vehicles trying to roll through security.

All students have to wear a blue uniform to identify them as students in the school, employees wear red uniforms.

Create gun free zones, and a mass shooting happens in a gun free zone. Create more gun free zones, more mass shootings happen in gun free zones. Over and over and over again. Almost all the mass shootings happen in gun free zones.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

So those who want gun free zones are either trying to encourage more mass shootings, or they are insane.

Meanwhile, in Israel, where they clearly don't want their children murdered. They protect them with armed guards.

WTF does this have to do with my previous post?

Israel's also waging an eternal war with it's neighbor with rocket attacks coming in at any given second. Bad example.

The only thing more sad than this shooting incident is the fact that this nation hasn't experienced anything like enough pain to bring about real change. I'm sick of hearing these pro gun people spew their selfish nonsense. I like guns a lot as well, but i'd give them up to help prevent this kind of thing.
Assault rifles and semi auto hand guns need to go. All of them. Retro active across the country. Confiscate them all with a buy back program. This country can afford to pay for other people's wars, it can afford to puchase guns off the streets to save lives.
Shotguns and hunting/target rifles should stay. They serve a purpose other than killing people. A shotgun is all one needs for home defense. A hunting rifle is all you need for hunting. A target rifle is for fun and target shooting. If you can't defend yourself, shoot a deer, or hit a target with a 5 round magazine, then you don't need to compensate for that with a 30 round AR-15, instead you need more practice.
The gun control problem boils down to simple selfishness. People don't think that given up THEIR damn gun will help anything, so they choose to argue and let people die instead. Fuck these selfish bastards. Get over your damn killing machines and get over yourselves. Having an assault rifle of any kind should be viewed the same as owning a hand grenade. Why the hell would you need a hand grenade? Why the hell do you need an assault rifle? What can't you do with a revolver? Why do you need 16 rounds in your semi auto glock 9?
Nope, instead, i'm the idiot. Anyone who wants these weapons out of our country are the idiots. Somehow, someway, after 20 kids get slaughtered by another AR-15 incident, the people who think that MORE guns are the solution are somehow the enlightened ones with all the answers. Yeah, lets arm our fucking teachers with M4's. Seriously? Some gun freak said that shit in response to this shooting. The day we need to arm our cute little teachers with fucking M4's is the day this experiment of a nation failed.

You do know that most cops can't bring down a bad guy with 6 shots (at least according to them), right? And frankly, snub noses are light as hell so why couldn't the exact same tragedy happen with a bad guy who has 7 or 8 snub nose revolvers? Hell, I highly doubt one of the teachers was going to even attempt to tackle him anyway so he could have even reloaded if he made it through all 8 revolvers.

Lastly, how many gang members and/or criminals do you suppose will take part in your "gun buy back"? You have a really good argument for law abiding citizens to turn in their guns but I have yet to hear how you are going to get the non-law abiding citizens to obey your new law.

Or we could just legalize drugs, let everyone who is currently in prison on drug charges out and consolidate the remaining prisoners in other jails. The metric shitload of jails that will be left empty fit your description rather well. Just trying to save the taxpayers some money

The sad part is that you don't think teachers would do anything to protect their students. As evidenced by the principal, some educators will give their lives to protect the children in their charge.

And they are generally treated like shit by the public. They deserve better.

Those teachers didn't give their lives to protect the children. They did lose their lives, but didn't actually protect the students.

What happens if a teacher actually protected their students? They'd be treated like a pariah by all the left wing anti-gun nuts in the education establishment that would rather see children shot, than for a teacher to actually protect their students with a gun.

Pearl High School shooting: "Although Myrick saved lives, beyond question, some treat him as a leper. After the shootings, and the relatively peaceful ending to something that could have made Columbine pale in comparison, Myrick was in exile. He'd held a gun to a student's head, and his colleagues simply couldn't accept that."

Pretty irrelevant to the topic of gun control, but an educator who sincerely wants to protect his students would be better served with a firearm at his side (and training to use it) than without.

One would think that would be the takeaway from this tragedy, instead of "ban all guns," but common sense is not so common.

Yeah? Adding a gun to a classroom of 6 or 7-year olds is the answer, is it? Or better still... what about high schoolers?

Also, last I checked this thread is about the shooting. Gun control is an aspect of that discussion, but maybe the efforts of teachers ought to be, too.

Do you have some reasons or are you just saying it "sounds bad?"

Wait... you're saying you don't see any reasons that make it a bad idea? They aren't self-evident?

This ain't a "sounds bad" situation. This is a "totally absurd" situation.

Why is it bad? An armed adult in the school could have saved many children's lifes. Why do you think all mass shootings occur in "gun free zones"?

Because the killers know nobody can stop them. We need to end gun free zones and allow citizens the means to protect themselves and others. Do it for the children. Gun free zones are "defenseless victims" zones.

No, they aren't self evident, not to me. Please spell them out for me as if I were a 5 year old.

Your opinion seems to be that no one is competent enough to be trusted with their own defense, and the matter must be left to the state. What makes you think the state, being composed of said individuals, suddenly becomes competent?

Again, no one is forced to carry. It is a choice. Forced armament is as ludicrous as forced disarmament. As for "gun free zones," the intent is to make a "crime free zone," but it is just about as effective as putting up a sign saying "crime free zone."

If the idea of it being in the classroom bothers you, how about administrators being allowed to carry them?

Last time a school was attacked in Israel, one of the students shot the attacker. It was some kind of religious school (Yeshiva), the guy who stopped the shooting was an adult, older than most college students. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercaz_HaRav_shooting

Oh wait, I'm confused. Don't you guys hate public schools anyway?

Shouldn't your solution be private schools with armed faculty?

If you've been in a room with 20-30 6yr olds then you might know that they almost all want attention. Meanwhile, the teacher is supposed to be controlling the room and instructing. You want to add that they also need to be constantly aware of a firearm. Is it visible to the children? Do they know it's there? Do you want kids being schooled with that tension constantly present?

And how long until one of these teachers (or admins) acts as worthless as you think they are already and uses that sanctioned weapon to do some damage of their own? Or do you think these people should be trusted with this added responsibility, but not have a say in how your kids understand literature or history?

This is a preposterous point. If a teacher wanted to get a gun and shoot up a school, they could very easily do it, and much easier than anyone else; they already have automatic access by virtue of their position as staff of the school. So how come we aren't reading about more school shootings being done by teachers? Have there been any school shootings done by teachers? Ever? It seems ridiculous to contend that putting a gun in a classroom is going to turn teachers, a group who never shoots up public places, into a bunch of raving lunatics sitting on a powderkeg just waiting to explode. It's like you think the presence of a gun turns people homocidal. Well then why aren't cops constantly flipping out and shooting up police stations? Do you view guns as a real-world equivalent of Sauron's ring, constantly speaking in the hushed tones of Mordor, convincing everyone around them to do harm to one another? It's ridiculous.

There are good arguments for keeping guns out of classrooms. Retarded paranoia isn't among them.

I'm not the sort that denigrates teachers all the time. I value teachers and don't think that mandating they manage a firearm is an actual viable solution.

Yeah, I used a lot of hyperbole.

I like that these shooters are continually described as crazy and unpredictable... but also totally calculating and rational.

Also fun free is a great typo.
