Connector question

My Ausus mb has a 24 pin connector plus a 4 pin connector. I have two power supplies. One has 24 pin plus an 8 pin connector (plus 6 pin sli connectors, esata, etc) The other power supply has a 20 pin plus a 4 pin connector (plus others).
Do I need a power supply that has a 24 pin plus a 4 pin? If so - what spec is that?
I've looked for online guides but no luck.
Thanks in advance.

Let's make sure we're clear on what connectors are what.

For the motherboard, there is 20-pin power connectors and 24-pin power connectors. MOST 24-pin power connectors consist of a 20-pin and a 4-pin that can be attached and detached so they can be used in both 20-pin and 24-pin motherboards.

4-pin power connectors power the CPU. So do 8-pin power connectors. Often times, an 8-pin can be split to make two 4-pin connectors.

The power supply that has a 20-pin and a 4-pin: If it's REALLY old, it may have just that and may be made for motherboards that are pre-24-pin. This PSU may not be good to use in a modern system because it probably has most of it's power on the +5V and certainly no PCIe connectors. If the PSU has a 20+4-pin, it HAS TO HAVE a 4-pin as well. The two are always found on the same PSU. It's part of the standard.

The power supply that you have that has a 24-pin and an 8-pin: I almost guarantee you that the 8-pin on that PSU splits in two. You typically don't see a power supply with an 8-pin that DOES NOT also have a 4-pin for the CPU.

When I get home I'll ck my psu with the 24 / 8 pin connectors and see if the 8 can be split into two. If not just slip half of it onto the mb's 4 pin connector? I agree with you - I thought it was strange to have a 24 pin psu w/o a 4 pin connector.
Thanks for the help.

If the 8 pin doesn't split then i hope you have room to the side of the connection to allow the other 4 pins to hang off.

Well the 8 pin didn't split but there was enough room to get 1/2 of it on the mb's 4 pin connection. Machine working fine.
Thanks for the help - don't think I'd be brave enough to do that without advice!
