our contract with symantec is up this summer. i would like to give my boss some alternatives. we also use Ghost, so i am not sure how that will work, if we drop symantec corp. edition as our anti-virus, they might jack up our ghost licenses.

we have about 150,000 computers , so i need something that other large corporations use instead of symantec. it doens't have to be free, in fact , if its free it would probably not get consideration. just cheaper than symantec is fine. actually at this point price isn't the issue, what anti-virus programs are used by the large corporations?

Trend Micro, Sophos & McAfee Enterprise editions come to mind.

Housecall now has an alert for what they are calling "CRCK_JBEAN.A." It took me a few seconds 'til I realized that it was picking up Magical Jellybean's Keyfinder. They're calling it "greyware" because it can be used for "malevolent purposes."

I've read McAfee has too few updates and is resource hungry, is this true?

I've read Kaspersky, when you buy the personal version, can be installed on as many systems as you want? Also, how resource hungrey is Kaspersky?

If neither of these, what then...

i'd stay away from anything mcafee, and norton i don't even care for all that much (although its better than mcafee) (nortons real time protection doesn't seem to work all that great)

i use trendmicro's PC-cillian (they also have a free online scan feature)

i would go with kaspersky (everyone here seems to either really like it or at least think its decent)

^I just uninstalled AntiVir7 and installed McAfee 8 on my mom's/sister's PC and it found 13 trojans and 2 viruses that AntiVir7 couldn't pic up. I am pleased with McAfee so far.

I just got Kaspersky on wed., and so far I'm loving it. (no viruses found, but I dind't doubt that Norton was doing its job, I did know it was very effcient at doing it though.)

My computer got hit by what I think is a virus today. I have McAfee virus scan and firewall, and they were fully updated. I downloaded Antivir 7 and installed it today because my subscription to Mcafee will expire soon. Shortly afterwards, my computer locked up completely (ctr+alt+del didn't work). I did a hard reset and was greeted with a windows that was about 1/100 of its original speed. It isn't a hardware issue because I booted Ubuntu live from a cd and it works fine. Windows now takes about 3 mins to open a window. I am attempting a virus scan, but it will take a long time. My other comp has no SATA ports to scan my main computer's hard drive. Does anyone have a suggestion as what I should do?

Edit: Safe mode seems fine. I might be able to get the scan completed now.

Edit 2: It looks like it was just a conflict between AntiVir and McAfee. At least the problem is solved.

That's what it sounds like. It's always problematic to have two AV's installed with both of them having real-time monitoring/scanning enabled.

Does anyone know of any websites that have tested ALL of the Anti-Virus software apps?
Need to see comparisons of not just the "big 4", but many other brands as well.

Hi all, It's time I made a change of AntiVirus 'ware. I've been using KAV Pro (Kaspersky) and loved it, but it's starting to miss non-virus & worm malware that their newer version can catch....however, their latest version idiotically won't scan archives or zipped files! Their Beta v6 DOES, and I'm going to try it, but I'd like to check out all the available options.

Does anyone know of any websites that have tested ALL or close to it, of the AntiVirus software apps? Every time I search for something like this, all I see is NAV, McAfee, Panda, Trend, and maybe AVG, that's about it. These types of reviews are of little use without apps by KAV, NOD, BitDefender, eTrust, AVG, and several others that are not even part of the tests. Before I got KAV, I d'loaded about 10+ AV programs and tested them myself, but that's just not practical to do that again, it's just too time-consuming.

I appreciate any info.

I'm having a wierd issue where XP (pro) runs really slowly, it seems fine in safe mode but I also have the issue where I can't get into add/remove programs. I get the message to wait while the list being populated but the programs never show up. I've tried running an online virus scanner, the latest version of AntiVir and Adaware. Does anyone have a few suggestions on what I can do to fix the problem?

Try using Panda Online. It won't fix anything, but it's really good at finding malware, if any exists.

You have to use IE. Allow the installation of the component.

When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the "See Report" button, then "Save Report" and save it to a convenient location.

Arkitech I hope you didn't use Panda. It screwed up my PC. That @#$%! site loads all sorts of crap on your HD! Apparently it installs software! I had a Panda Program Files folder, numerous DLL files in the System32 folder, and an XP Service all created just by the online scan!

It's not as good as McAfee's online scan anyway. I tested several of these and McAfee found the most.

BTW, AdAware* isn't AV software, it's anti-malware software. If your PC is ok in safe mode, it's something that's loading with Windows. Like something in your System Tray, or a driver. Run MSCONFIG and uncheck boxes there under the Start Up tab one by one until the problem goes away and you've found the cause. (This is assuming you found no malware).

*In my testing I've found Spyware Terminator to be better than AdAware.

You must have d/l'ed the trial software. The scan only d/l's an ActiveX - which most online scans do. TrendMicro's European Online Scan is Java-based which works well with FF.

The reason I suggested Panda is that it's very good for finding malware that's still present - but not as fix. For that, I'd recommend BitDefender's Online Scan. Personally, I'm not a big fan of McAfee but - hey, if it worked for you, that's a good thing.
