In the cooking world, people that only eat foods in only one way are considered in the same light as rednecks.

Just to add flames to the fire, in the cooking world foodies don't put A1 on steaks.

Are you part of the cooking world to know that? Because you're wrong. There's not many decent chop houses that don't add SOMETHING to a steak. Plain steaks these days are really passé. If you're paying $30 + for a steak, we want you to have a taste experience, not a Sizzler experience.

That means you are being shafted. Sauces are added to steak to improve its taste, nes pas? If you cannot present the steak au naturel, it means it's inferior quality and you are being ripped off. Salt and pepper only please.

LOL! If you go out to eat and get a steak nearly anywhere besides a diner, the steak you order is going to be covered in oil, and have some seasoning combination that contains salt, cracked pepper, and one or more of the following: onion powder, garlic (power or minced), coriander, thyme, sage, cayenne, curry, and even mustard. (Outback Steakhouse is rumored to soak their steaks in cola, but I can't confirm this). On top of this, it is most likely put through a tenderizer (a device that puts thin skewers through the steak).

I've got a 2 year degree from Zane State College in Culinary Arts (graduated in '93) and had been a caterer for over a decade during the 90's. I've cooked for country clubs and social events more times than you've looked at animal porn (and that's a lot!). Music and cooking are two big passions in my life that' I've become expert in. When someone comes along that Googled a couple of steak recipes then claims they know what they're doing and I'm wrong REALLY works me the wrong way.

I lived in Buenos Aires for 8 years.... I am sure I ate more steak than you have seen (probably an exaggeration). And no, I don't eat steak with all that crap, just pepper and salt thank you. And no, I don't go to steakhouses unless I have no choice.

PS Soaking meat in cola is a tenderizing process. Again, used to make lower grade meat taste better.

Cook it like this color wise. Wife and I always put a little olive oil and a light dusting of montreal steak seasoning on each side. Sometimes we use bacon grease instead of olive oil (trust me, it is GOOD). Gotta be careful though, very easy to overdo the montreal stuff.

Well, I have to say that I used IamWiz's method of cooking....5 minutes on one side then rotated the steak 90 degrees for another 5. It was perfect!

Before cooking the steak I splashed some olive oil on it and added the fresh crushed sea salt. After the steak was finished cooking I added the peppercorns and some crushed peppercorns. It was delicious!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. The steak was so good it did not need any sauces as the S&P were a good compliment to the steaks natural flavor.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions!!!!

I must agree with the iron skillet/oven method , the steaks are soo much better/tender, everything else is up to personal taste, i prefer the salt/pepper

Pffft. Any good cut of steak is handled the same way.

You rub kosher salt and cracked black pepper onto it. In large amounts and really grind it into the steak. Set the heat between a couple degrees left of medium and use the lowest grill. Flip only once and usually, for me, after 7 minutes cause I like it medium. Let it rest for 8 minutes so the juice reabsorbs into the meat. Will be the best steak you've ever eaten.

depending on how much of a purist you are, one can argue that this is not the correct way to do it as you are not using charcoal

I am acutely aware of high end steakhouses that use 1200' broilers however.

Had to add.
I went with my boss to a steakhouse once.
When asked "How would you like your steak ?"
He replied "Smack the cow on the ass and send it out here !"

I prefer steak with just salt+pepper, then grilled under very high heat till its no longer bloody.

And I'll use the juices of the meat and the meat itself for flavor. Keep ruining your steaks though. If you have to put something on the steak other than salt/pepper/MAYBE some other dry stuff for crust stuff you're doing it wrong. If the steak doesn't hit you with an overwhelming, eyeball rolling into the back of your skull beef flavor and melt in your mouth - then you are doing it wrong.

i'll put a rub on any good cut of meat. It might be that I am east asian... but I need my food to be tinkered with to the likings of my taste buds.

salt and pepper is good enough for chicken nuggets and basic burgers. but I like some garlic, brown sugar, paprika and fresh black corn grounds in the right proportions to supplement the aftertaste of my expensive meat.

if you are this naturalistic about your steaks then why the eff do you need salt and pepper?

please explain how adding foreign substances of blandness is different than me making my well earned meat the way I want it. You apparently do.

....

thought so.

I think it's implied (well at least for me) that herbs and spices tend to enhance while sauces tend to cover up

I'm doing a steak tomorrow, and it's going to be...

salt, pepper, garlic

Salt and pepper mostly bring out the flavor in something more so than add their own.

salt draws out the flavor of food. pepper does the same, also adds a slight dimension to it. these are fundamental elements. hence they were so valuable ("white & black gold").

kingdoms and empires werent forged on a1 steak sauce and oregano...

never throw them directly on the grill they aren't freaking hamburgers! You can probably leave them out on the counter while you are at worka nd ocme home to thawed and ready to cook meat.
