Just thought that all you overclockers out there might enjoy a new project that I have just recently finished entitled: Copper Heatsink on the Rocks. This play on words makes reference to a computer being passively cooled with a wine chiller.

Pros:
-Dust free (sealed completely)
-Easy to remove cover
-No moving parts, no fans, all passive (minus the one PSU fan, I couldn't afford a passive PSU)
-Pure copper insulated heatsink that is counter-cooled by a wine chiller at 41 degrees F, allows for much OC'ing
-Currently at 91 degrees F after leaving on for 1 whole day, still counting, with no flubs (heat measured from the copper closest to the CPU itself)

I have not OC'd it yet, but eventually will after viewing how stable it is after 1 week.

To view the video, tutorial, details, pictures, etc, go here: http://www.leetupload.com/tuto..._heatsinkon_the_rocks/

Hope all of you enjoy! Comments are quite welcome.

Interesting work, you call it a "heatpipe" what are you using for a wick, or to circulate the water? What are the board specs and what chip are you using?

Well i have some questions! First of all why not cut a penny to fit in the hole in the middle? Ok now how does this damn chiller work? Does it not have a return?? And a link to that chiller please?

It's not a heatpipe per se, since there is no liqud in the pipe. Basically he has a copper pipe connected to the CPU, with the other end inside the chiller. Heat will always try to move towards a cooler place, thus the heat is picked up by the pipe and transfered to the cooler, where it is absorbed. Neat idea, but I doubt you're actually gaining anything besides experience...

I'll try and answer everything. Sorry for calling it a heat pipe, its a copper tube, that moves heat. Go figure, eh? Proper term should have been heatsink. Secondly, thanks for correcting my link, Specs: P3, generic Intel/Dell mobo from 2001, 512mb of ram. I will be sure to upgrade the unit later, but this is purely an active testing sort of project, so adjustments will be made along the way. Soldering pennies is much harder than you think, you would need a plasma cutter to properly cut it (takes 2000 degrees to cut/melt it). I mean, we have one, but it was kind of too dangerous, and didn't have the right goggles. I mean, it freakin' took 2 1,500 degree blow torches just to solder the silver/flux to the copper. And damn, that stupid 5% zinc was a real pain too. At one time, it shot out across the room!

About the song, all it said was "Unknown Artist - Track 12." Nice eh? I had the same question until I got some updated information about it from a person on Instructables that told me it was by PPK. By the by, it is now on Hack a Day here: http://www.hackaday.com/2007/0...heat-pipe-wine-cooler/

Also, corrected link = here: http://www.leetupload.com/tuto..._heatsinkon_the_rocks/

And in terms of a gain, check this. In the hot room of mine here in the mid west, it has been around 92 degrees around the outside of the case, and the temperature of the base of the copper be 90! I'm going to record temps once a week to see how it goes when being left on 24/7. It'll be even more interesting when I get higher end parts. Friend of mine is giving me some parts, we'll see what I get!
