So today I hear my roommate up on his system Bitching and Moaning about this damn CD, this damn computer......lol.

Well anyway he bought the New CD from Coldplay and well he wanted to make a legit backup of the CD onto .mp3 (MP3 deck in car) format for his car so he didnt ruin the orginal Disk, well it is Copy protected. I tried a couple of different things, but couldnt get it either. So I am asking if anyone knows or remembers the whole thing going around about the sharpie and CopyRight CDs??

Seriously what a bunch of BS RIAA is doing. I mean Jesus Christ, I understand the whole thing about the artist and their $$, but the RIAA=Ghey. I know I can get around this but for the life of me I cant remember.

Well thanks for the help if I get any...cya.

Well, I am not seeing anything about any of Coldplay's CDs being copy protected. However, keep in mind, if they have some form of copy protection, they are not CDs, they are plastic disks with data on them They do not conform to the red book standard, so can not (legaly) be called CDs by those who sell them.

But as for your qestion, how are they protected? Can you read them on your computer? Does it crash when they are inserted? Do you get any error messages? Please be as specific as possible

Nope I do not get any errors at all. I put in the CD and I go into the drive and explore, then highlight all the tracks and just copy them over, like I would any other CD. Well this one copys very fast and then when you double click on the track winamp, WMP, or whatever I coose to use pops up and nothing. No errors what so ever. then I use CloneCd and rip an image of the CD to the HD then then burn the Image to CD, toss it in and nothing. I also tried Nero and nothing either. here is the artcile I found. http://www.msnbc.com/news/754854.asp

But I wonder what they consider the outer rim, I will be trying this and I will post results. I did a search on google for Copyright CS with Coldplay and I found some info on it.

When I toss in the orginal CD and explore the contents. It says

"Track1.cda"
"Track2.cda"
"Track3.cda"
etc, So I copied one track and I opend it up with WMP and it says "format not supported"

So...um. I also just did the pen thing and nothing??

You have to understand that this method works only on one highly specialized form of copy protection. It will not work on most of them, and will probaly just ruin your CD.

In theory, a CloneCD copy, with the right options, will always work. I would use these options:

Read sub channel data from data tracks
Read sub channel data from audio tracks
Fast error skip
Fast error skip options -> Error corection -> None

And if that doesn't work, copy it at 1x

However, that will make a copy, not an MP3 out of it.

*.cda files aren't the actual music tracks. Think of them as "shortcuts" to the WAV files on the CD. I'm guessing that CD is not protected, you're just going about the wrong way to rip it.

Check out the AnandTech FAQ for a guide on ripping audio CDs to MP3s. I like to use CDex, it's very easy to use and supports LAME with VBR, which in my experience, is the best way to rip mp3s for optimal quality. But that's just my opinion, there are many other schools of thought on the issue. Either way, if you use a good CDRipping program like CDex or EAC, you should be able to backup the CD to mp3s

If people didn't keep stealing their product they would have more money to spend on healthcare. Besides it is not their job to take care of you.

I like the color of your embriodery good neighbor.

btw does anyone know if EAC can be used on E2: Attack of the Clones in order to make MP3 files? I've held off buying that disc until I know for sure I can make MP3s.

Nefrodite, thanks. I also have a LiteOn so hopefully I won't run into trouble *if* I decide to buy EP2. It sends the wrong message to the RIAA so I'm in an ethical pinch right now.
