Corrupted DNS Info

My computer connects to the Internet via an ActionTec DSL modem/wireless AP combo (through the wired ethernet port). I've noticed that after a few days of uptime, various websites will stop working ...it doesn't really seem like there's a pattern as to which websites will break (trying to access them will bring up a "This page cannot be displayed" error in IE), sometimes it's google, sometimes anandtech, sometimes ebay, etc., although once I notice that some sites are breaking, there is a very high probability that if I enter a URL for a site that I have not been to since restarting the modem, it will fail as well. I've also noticed that if I open up mIRC and do a /dns of a non-working URL and then try to access it via the IP address that I get, there is a very high probability that the "broken" site will suddenly spring to life. Also, resetting the modem (unplugging it and the plugging back in) fixes this problem completely (for the next day or so).

So anyways, my question is, what's the likely cause of this? Is there any way to prevent it from happening that doesn't involve severing my Internet conenction every couple of days? Is my modem just being crazy?

Sounds like your DSL modem has a DNS setting wrong. I would look over the DSL configuration and make sure it set to default settings and the DNS ip addresses are your ISP's DNS servers.

There's nothing in the config that strikes me as being obviously wrong, though I have some new weirdness to report...http://www.monarchcomputers.com/ now resolves to 127.0.0.1, which is obviously not correct. Is it possible for my DSL modem to have a virus? Maybe a firmware upgrade is in order?

or perhaps you have spyware/adware. Full scans w/updated defs in safe mode to start with. Check hosts and lmhosts (may not exist) on your machine.

open a command prompt when you have the issue and type "nslookup" to see if it can resolve your name servers.

Do you use any "web acceleration" stuff some ISP's offer. Have you ever?

I've actually done several scans with AdAware and Norton Antivirus as a result of these weird DNS issues, and they've never turned up anything. Also, my registry appears to be fine, and there's nothing suspicious as far as I can see my looking at the list of active processes. My hosts/Imhosts files appear to be fine. If this was being caused by spyware/adware, then wouldn't resetting the modem have no effect on it at all?

Nope and nope.
